Is the Jeep Wrangler Right for You?
What Is It and Who Is It Meant For?
The 2020 Jeep Wrangler is a rugged compact SUV that seats up to five people. It’s meant for drivers who look at a mountain and want to get to the top. But shoppers must be willing to sacrifice on-road comfort for off-road capability.
What Makes It Unique?
The Wrangler is an iconic, one-of-a-kind vehicle. It continues to put off-roading and ruggedness first, and it’s become the go-to option for consumers who need something that can tackle any kind of terrain.
Wrangler vs. Other Jeeps
In Jeep’s SUV–heavy lineup, the Wrangler sits above the compact Compass and Cherokee in cost, but below the midsize Grand Cherokee. Jeep doesn’t have a seven-passenger SUV in its lineup.
Jeep Wrangler vs. Competition
Rugged SUVs like the Wrangler are growing in popularity, but there still aren’t a lot of competitors on the market. That pretty much puts the Wrangler in a class of its own:
Toyota 4Runner: The only thing close to the Wrangler.
Jeep Grand Cherokee: Nearly as capable, with way more luxury.
Land Rover Defender: Expensive, but just as capable off-road.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class: Much pricier, much more powerful and just as competent off road.
Is the 2020 Model Year Right for You?
Changes for 2020
A 3.6-liter V6 is standard throughout the majority of the lineup. On the Sahara trim it has a mild-hybrid system, meaning there’s a large battery to help improve fuel economy.
There are three new packages: Willys Edition, Wrangler Freedom Edition, and Wrangler Black and Tan package.
0-liter EcoDiesel V6 is optional on Unlimited (4-door) trims
2020 Jeep Wrangler vs. Older Wranglers
Jeep introduced an all-new version of the Wrangler for the 2018 model year. Since then, the automaker has made a few changes here and there. If those changes aren’t essential to you, you could save money by choosing a used Wrangler.
You can find used Jeep Wranglers with Carfax’s used car listings. Each used car comes with a free Carfax vehicle history report.

Which 2020 Jeep Wrangler Trim Is the Best Value?
The original starting prices for each trim, including MSRP and the destination charge:
Sport: $29,790
Sport S: $33.185
Black and Tan: $34,685
Willys: $35,485
Freedom: $35,685
Sport Altitude (4-door only): $38,185
Rubicon: $40,120
Sahara (4-door only): $40,335
Sahara Altitude (4-door only): $43,435
Unless you go off-roading every weekend, we recommend staying with one of the Wrangler’s lower trims, like the Sport S. That trim can be fitted with a few available packages that bring more safety and convenience features. With those options added, it should meet the needs of most drivers.

The Willys is a good value proposition, as well, as it comes with heavy-duty brakes, a locking differential and larger off-road tires. If you want leather seating, the Sahara is the first trim to come with that feature.
2020 Jeep Wrangler Performance
Engine Options
The Wrangler has three engine options:
285-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 with a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission and 4-wheel drive
268-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic and 4-wheel drive
260-horsepower 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 with an 8-speed automatic and 4-wheel drive
Compared to the class? Most of the Wrangler’s engines have more power than the Toyota 4Runner’s, but they’re less powerful than those in the segment’s more expensive offerings, such as the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The Wrangler also has a diesel engine option, something few SUVs do.
Fuel Economy
3.6-liter V6: 20 EPA-estimated combined mpg*
2.0-liter four-cylinder (2-door/4-door): 23/21 mpg
3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6: 25 mpg
*The EPA uses a mixture of highway and city driving for its combined estimate.
Compared to the class? It is compared to other off-roaders. Thanks to its stop/start system and an available mild-hybrid system, the Wrangler is more efficient than ever.
2020 Jeep Wrangler Safety Ratings & Features
Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has completed testing of the 2020 Wrangler.
Key Standard Features
Rearview camera: Provides driver a view of what’s behind the vehicle when reversing.
Key Optional Features
Forward collision warning
Blind spot warning
Rear cross-traffic alert
Rear parking sensors
Adaptive cruise control
2020 Jeep Wrangler Interior
Cabin Storage and Features
Cupholders: 2 front, 2 rear
Storage tray
Cabin storage areas: Glovebox, center console bin under armrest, front and rear door pockets
Compared to the class? Below average for the segment. The Jeep Wrangler is built for function, not form. Compared to off-roading rivals, the Wrangler’s low-quality cabin, plastic-heavy design and loud interior are all compromises that give the SUV its rugged qualities. If you compare the Wrangler to more mainstream SUVs, however, its cabin feels Spartan.
Cargo Space
12.9 or 31.7 cubic feet with rear seats up in 2- and 4-door models, respectively)
31.7 or 72.4 cubic feet with rear seats folded in 2- and 4-door models, respectively
Compared to the class? Compared to other SUVs in the compact segment, the 4-door Wrangler is spacious. Two-door models have less cargo space.
Seating Space
Compared to the class? Four-door Wranglers have more front and rear headroom than other compact SUVs, but less rear legroom. Two-door models have even less rear legroom than their 4-door counterparts.
2020 Jeep Wrangler Warranty
3 years / 36,000 miles bumper-to-bumper. Covers many parts and systems but doesn’t include consumables such as brakes, tires, wiper blades, shocks or struts.
5 years / 60,000 miles powertrain. Covers major engine and transmission components.
Both warranties are measured from the date the first owner purchases the car but are transferable to used-car buyers.
Compared to the class? Common for the class.

2020 Jeep Wrangler Reviews
Consumer Reviews
All around very happy and fun.
Driven almost 20,000 miles trouble free. Only had routine servicing and a battery change. Performed well in hot desert climate as well as snow and ice covered roads and terrain.
Lot of fun, great off road and comfortable on road. Great looking my daughter loves it.
Jeep is in great shape, well maintained and clean. Replaced inner fender liner with metal liners that assist with range and better wind flow distribution.
Love this jeep sitting up high
