The venerable Jeep Wrangler remains a top choice for outdoor enthusiasts. For 2014, it gets minor updates to different packages.
For years, the Jeep Wrangler has been a solid performer with a large following. The 2014 Jeep Wrangler retains the many rugged characteristics and features that make Jeeps great.
Unlike the majority of the automotive market, the 2014 Jeep Wrangler has its unique look. The SUV has styling harkening back to its heritage as a military vehicle combined with contemporary styling, it is a complex design mix.
From its rugged front grille through flat, boxy sides, it is apparent; this isn’t a vehicle for those interested in fuel economy. Where most of those vehicles have curves galore for aerodynamics, the Jeep Wrangler uses very little curvature. It has a boxy front and rear end that screams take me off-road.
On the inside, you won’t get the comforts from in a luxury sedan. What you will get is big, strong knobs and switches meant to handle abuse. The sitting area is straightforward and is meant to help provide safety rather than provide a long, comfortable ride.
From the seats, to the grab handles and the dash, the Jeep Wrangler has a strong, tough interior. It has ample head and leg room to handle all different types of passengers.
For the 2014 model year, the Jeep Wrangler has a Pentastar 3.6L V-6 standard across its lineup. This engine produces 285 HP and 260 lbs-ft of torque. It is mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission with hill-start assist. Also available is five-speed automatic with both hill-start assist and hill-descent control as optional.
Unlike other vehicles, 4wd is standard as well as a high- and low-range transfer case. The Rubicon has an upgraded transfer case with extra low gearing.
This powertrain doesn’t set record speeds on the track, but that isn’t really the point. What it does do, is provide more than ample power for off-road driving. There will always be people who want more horsepower, but as it is, the 3.6L V6 provides plenty of power and along with the 4wd capability, it will get you out of most situations.
The big issue is for the Jeep Wrangler is fuel economy. It gets an EPA-estimated 17/21/18 city/highway/combined for the 2-door version. The 4-door gets 16/20/18 for automatic and 16/21/18 for the manual. These numbers are a point of concern moving forward and some changes to the next-generation Jeep Wrangler to improve fuel economy are expected.
The 2014 Jeep Wrangler simply doesn’t have the vast amount of technology offerings found in other vehicles, yet it has an ample assortment.
For starters, the Jeep uses the Uconnect system found in other Chrysler products. This infotainment system has been praised by most critics for its ease of use and functionality. It can be ordered with navigation, voice command and large hard drive to store music.
Also, Jeep Wrangler buyers can choose different Sirius XM subscriptions to meet their needs. This subscription is accessible through the Uconnect system.
Lastly, most Jeeps will come with steering wheel mounted audio controls, Alpine 9-speaker system with all weather subwoofer and an audio jack input for mobile devices.
The off-road SUV comes with standard front air bags, hill start assist, antilock disc brakes and traction and stability control. Front side airbags are optional.
With its differing array of equipment like a canvas soft top and unique, removable side doors, the 2014 Jeep Wrangler doesn’t fare well in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests like the side-impact crash test. For these tests, IIHS gave it the worst rating of “Poor” and the Unlimited got a “Marginal” rating. It did achieve a “Good” rating for the frontal crash test ratings.
For cost-effectiveness, the 2014 Jeep Wrangler is a bit hard to judge. On the one hand, its starting MSRP of $22,595 for the Sport makes it a bargain for an SUV, However, with its poor fuel economy and extra upkeep due to its transfer cases over a standard SUV, it will have additional costs. Yet, the Jeep Wrangler isn’t really meant for a long-run commuter vehicle, instead it is meant to get dirty.
For most Jeep Wrangler buyers, the cost-effectiveness of the SUV over other models is a moot point. They are going to buy it to go off-road and they aren’t really concerned with fuel economy.
The 2014 Jeep Wrangler stands alone in its category as a one-of-a-kind off-road SUV. With its military-styling heritage and rugged features, it is a crime to drive it down a highway. However, changes are on the horizon to do just that – make it a better highway driver. This will be a sad day for Wrangler fans and the 2014 model will become one of the last truly Jeep models.
