2006 BMW M6
2006 BMW M6 Review
The 2006 BMW M6 is a luxurious sports car that’s available as both a coupe and convertible. Perched at the very top of the 6 Series lineup, the M6 sets itself apart thanks to a 500-horsepower V10 engine nestled under the hood. Power is routed to the rear wheels via a 7-speed sequential automated-manual transmission. While it’s intended to boost the speed and performance of the M6, this gearbox can also feel sluggish to respond and overly complicated. Unfortunately for BMW purists, a manual transmission is not available.
Thanks to its imposing stance, the M6 cuts a stylish path through traffic. It’s a big and heavy car, however, and its substantial curb weight limits the car’s overall athleticism. Handling is smooth and linear, and the cabin stands out for its high quality materials. Better still, because it’s on the larger side of the coupe/convertible spectrum, there is plenty of room for adults in either row of seating. Cargo space is also impressive with 13 cubic feet of capacity in the coupe.
While the interior itself is an attractive and comfortable place to spend your time, there is a learning curve with the M6’s iDrive infotainment system. Many of the controls can feel overly complex with too many distracting menus. It might not be a deal breaker for someone more interested in a 500-horsepower V10, but it’s worth consideration.

Sequential automated-manual gearbox.
Coupe and convertible body styles.
2007 BMW M6 vs. the Competition
Big bruising sport coupes like the M6 are thrilling to drive and, thankfully, often comfortable and docile enough for routine errands and commuting duty. Here are three rivals:
Aston Martin DB9: Silky V12 engine, gorgeous shape, James Bond would approve, and an elegant interior.
Mercedes-Benz SL-Class: Optional V12 engine, many tech touches, supple ride, and a retractable hardtop roof.
Bentley Continental GT: Sublime W12 engine, sonorous exhaust note, standard all-wheel drive, and gorgeous interior trim.
Where the M6 Sits in the 2006 BMW Lineup
The M6 happens to be the biggest and priciest sports car in BMW’s range. It’s positioned above the compact 3 Series, Z4 coupe and convertible, and regular versions of the 6 Series.
What’s the Best 2006 BMW M6 Trim for You?
Which Trim Is the Best Value
As expected, since it’s the halo model of an already luxurious coupe/convertible, BMW isn’t shy about loading things onto the M6. Standard fare consists of dual-zone climate control, a Harman Kardon stereo, power-adjustable front seats, navigation, leather upholstery, front and rear parking sensors, heated front seats, and an adaptive suspension.
Best Trim for Fuel Economy
Thanks to its 5.0-liter V10, the M6 is definitely quick. What it’s not is fuel efficient. The M6 returns an EPA-estimated 13 mpg combined.
Best Trim for Cargo Space
The M6 Coupe provides a handy 13 cubic feet of trunk volume.
Top-of-the-Line Trim
Since it’s already the top-of-the-line trim of the luxurious 6 Series, the M6 is loaded with pretty much all the bells and whistles available on this coupe and convertible. Notable options include a head-up instrument display, satellite radio, and an M Driver’s performance package.
Should I Buy an Older BMW M6 Instead?
The 2006 M6 is a brand new arrival for this model year and would be produced from 2006 to 2010. Since this is the first year it was sold, there are no older model years of the M6 to consider.

2006 BMW M6 Reviews
Consumer Reviews
This vehicle is definitely not for everyone. But if you are looking for a true, Formula 1 inspired, high performance racing machine that can be used as a daily driver, this is it! Don’t expect great fuel economy, the V-10 engine does suck up the fuel. I get 12 MPG around town and can get 18+ on the open road. Due expect awe inspiring performance! The V-10 engine came from BMW’s Formula 1 program many years ago. Just the sound of the engine winding up to the redline of 8,250 RPM is intoxicating! Don’t expect today’s technology where the car does everything for you. Do expect the experience of actually being a driver and taking control of your vehicle. At first, this was intended to be a bridge between my previous 6 Series BMW to the next generation of M6 with the Twin Turbo V-8. However, after experiencing 100,000 with the V-10 I will do whatever I can to keep this vehicle on the road for as long as I can.
Gobs of power (500HP). Nice sporty ride. Love the feel of SMG transmission. Oil changes need to be done every 5K miles at least to have a trouble free engine duration. Mine has 118K miles and counting.
This 2006 BMW M6 is pure joy. As soon as you push the button to turn it on you will be smiling. The sound that comes from the F1 style V10 is amazing. The options of trying to drive is leisurely mode to pushing that little M button and going into sport mode feels like no other. This car is an attention grabber. From the beautiful sleek design to the roaring sound of that V10. It’s a can’t miss on excitement. 400hp in leisurely mode to at the minimum 507hp once that M button has been engaged. All luxury leather interior with carbon fiber dash. Black sapphire paint on the exterior sparkles when the sun hits it. Carbon fiber roof to remove some weight allows this car to really move. CAN’T MISS ENJOYMENT
Great handling, performance & reaction to the road. The SMG transmission makes it even more enjoyable! A real driver’s car. If you drive this beast like it’s meant to be driven you’ll fall in love for sure. Like any other car all maintenance will need to be done. I do recommend having the transmission fluid & solenoid fluid flushed & replaced even though there’s a sticker claiming life time fluid there’s no such thing. Unless you’ve got Pegasus’s flying above your car & Unicorns trotting beside.
Amazing and Beautiful fast car, couldn’t be any happier owning one and getting behind the wheel! One of the best V10s ever created!
