The Porsche Panamera sent shock waves through the automotive industry when it was first launched in 2010, as its four-door configuration represented a big departure for a brand known for its sporty coupes and roadsters. In the years since its introduction, the Panamera has built a faithful audience, and the hatchback sedan is prized for its compelling blend of luxury, performance and utility.
2017 to Present: Porsche Panamera
The current generation of the Porsche Panamera was introduced for the 2017 model year. It’s the second generation for Porsche’s successful hatchback sedan, and it rides on an all-new platform. Notably, this new Panamera benefits from revised exterior styling that gives it a sleeker look. The interior has been reimagined and features an impressive new infotainment system. The Panamera also gets upgraded performance via its two new engines.
Compared to the outgoing model’s sheet metal, the current Panamera’s exterior has a sinuous appeal that’s more in step with the look of the brand’s coupes and convertibles. In front, teardrop-shaped headlights border a sculpted hood. When viewed in profile, the Panamera reveals meaty wheels and standard power-folding side mirrors. A rear view spotlights the car’s standard power hatchback.
The Panamera’s cabin is a haven of deluxe delights. A large touch screen rules the dash, and the styling throughout is a charming blend of nostalgia and futurism. Passengers enjoy a spacious environment, but keep in mind that the rear seat accommodates just two across.
Porsche’s Panamera skillfully braids power with comfort for a pleasing driving experience. Panamera 4S and Turbo models were offered at launch, which both come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The Panamera 4S debuted with a turbocharged V6 that provides 440 horsepower, while the Panamera Turbo features a turbocharged V8 with 550 horsepower.
Base models come fully loaded with standard features such as a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, a rearview camera, Bluetooth and a 10-speaker sound system. Available features include adaptive headlights, massaging front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel and a premium 14-speaker sound system.
The Porsche Panamera competes with luxury flagship sedans such as the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Jaguar XJ. Its sharp handling means it should also be cross-shopped against choices such as the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, Mercedes-Benz CLS, Tesla Model S and Audi S7. The Panamera’s distinctive style and memorable performance help it carve a secure niche for itself among these talented rivals.
Earlier Porsche Panamera Models
The first generation of the Porsche Panamera was launched for 2010. When it was first introduced, the Panamera was offered with a choice of rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The Panamera was available in S, 4S and Turbo trims (trims with 4 in their descriptors are equipped with all-wheel drive). Two engines were offered: a 400-horsepower 4.8-liter V8 and a turbocharged version of this engine good for 500 horsepower. All models came with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The 2010 Panamera came standard with 18-inch wheels, rear parking sensors, bi-xenon headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, a navigation system and an 11-speaker sound system. Upgrades included heated rear seats and a premium 14-speaker sound system.
For 2011, the Panamera added two new V6 models designed to provide better fuel efficiency: base and Panamera 4. A hybrid model was introduced for 2012, along with a range-topping new Turbo S model powered by a 550-horsepower twin-turbo V8. The model’s GTS and Platinum trims were launched in 2013, and 2014 saw the addition of a long-wheelbase Executive trim and a plug-in S E-Hybrid model. The Panamera S model’s 4.8-liter V8 was replaced with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6. Meanwhile, the base, GTS and Turbo models saw slight increases in output. The Turbo S was put on hiatus.
In 2015, the Turbo S returned with a new 570-horsepower twin-turbo V8. The list of standard features for all models grew to include satellite radio, HD radio and Porsche Online Services. In 2016 – the last year before the Panamera’s 2017 redesign – the Edition and Exclusive trims were added.
