2012 Nissan Xterra Review
Pros
- Highly capable off-road.
- Powerful V6 engine.
- Roomy cargo area.
- Durable interior materials.
Cons
- Poor fuel economy.
- Harsh ride quality.
- Rivals are available with more convenience features.
The 2012 Nissan Xterra is a compact two-row SUV that can seat up to five people. It’s meant for small families that need a rugged SUV with easy-to-clean materials and a decent amount of cargo capacity or commuters who want an SUV that can go off-roading on the weekends. With body-on-frame construction, low-range gearing, and an available four-wheel-drive (4WD) system, the Xterra is one of the more capable off-roaders in the class. Fitting in with the off-roading motif, the Xterra’s cargo area also has nifty features such as multiple tie-down points and a cargo floor that’s easy to clean.
The Xterra separates itself from the pack with its rugged design, off-roading capability, brawny V6 engine, and intuitive interior design. Keep in mind, though, it trails key rivals when it comes to fuel economy, ride quality, interior materials, and available convenience features. As a rugged SUV with a durable frame and punchy V6 engine, the Xterra has a harsh ride and gets poor fuel economy. While it has durable interior materials that are easy to clean, this SUV doesn’t have the same upscale look as rivals. And most of the Xterra’s competitors are available with high-end convenience features that Nissan doesn’t offer on its compact SUV.

A rugged compact SUV such as the Xterra is an ideal choice for shoppers who need a vehicle with a strong engine, serious off-roading capability, and a durable cabin. The Xterra competes with these rivals:

Toyota FJ Cruiser: Great off-roading capability, distinctive styling, a 260-horsepower V6 engine, and a roomy cargo area.
Subaru Forester: Standard all-wheel drive, a comfortable ride, a peppy turbocharged engine, and a roomy interior.

2012 Nissan Xterra Reviews
Consumer Reviews
In the last 3 years, new exhaust system, new front struts, new front brake discs and ceramic pads, and new brake lines.
Have owned the Xterra since 2015. It's been a great truck so far. Have never gotten stuck, decent gas milage and power. Hold a lot of stuff. Towed a popup camper and never had an issue. It's not nearly as fancy as all new vehicles but as an off reader it's great. Hidden gem in the truck world.
Extremely capable 4x4 that has never broken down. All issues were resolved in 2010 model years so no issues to worry about. 6 speed MT has been good. Clutch is a bit weak for tow capacity and added armor. Aftermarket is very small but has incredible capability for the price. Titan swap (11” IFS travel, armor, gearing, and lockers cost about 30% less than Toyota equivalent prices. Better chassis design than FJ and 4Runner, half the price used. Better engine (actually has power). Can be optioned with factory e-locker. Biggest issue is the lackluster interior and front seat angle. Very few aftermarket vehicle specific options but everything you need is available. Rear seats are hard to get into for shorter humans due to tire location.
Good truck excellent truck
Very reliable and inexpensive to operate.
