2001 LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER
Let's face it, you buy a Range Rover in the States because you WANT one, not because you NEED one. I bought my first Rangie in Costa Rica, where we do actually need it, after careful consideration of all of the mid-to-large size SUV's. I couldn't be happier with my choice. It really IS all that when it comes to creature comforts and brute off-road capability. I love it so much in fact, that I've just bought another one for our home in Florida! If you're considering an older P38 (1995-2002) Range Rover, the single most important factor to look for is the service history. If well cared for, these cars don't deserve the negative reputation. Our Costa Rican car with 138,000 miles on the clock has proven very reliable with the only needed repairs being a bad thermostat (inexpensive) and a rebuilt alternator. Hardly exotic or unusual things to go bad on a car of that age and mileage. This year we'll be replacing the intake manifold gaskets and the exhaust manifold gaskets as preventative maintenance. On the other hand, a car with poor maintenance history could eat you alive with repair costs. Look for the 2000+ model with the Bosch electronics. These are much more reliable. For the money, you won't find a better, more capable vehicle.
