2017 Toyota 4Runner Review

The 2017 Toyota 4Runner is a throwback to a time when SUVs were rugged enough to conquer rocky mountain paths. Still, the 4Runner brings more to just off-roading talent to the table. This midsize SUV provides ample cargo capacity, and there is abundant power from its V6 engine.

The 4Runner provides standard five-passenger seating, and seven-passenger seating is availa-ble. Buyers may choose between rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.

For 2017, two new trims join the 4Runner lineup: TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium. Both these trims offer enhanced off-road ability, and build on the 4Runner's natural gift for tack-ling trails. Four other trims are available: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Pro and Limited.

Exterior

Exterior

The 2017 Toyota 4Runner boasts sheet metal with a distinctly old-school look. A massive grill dominates the front fascia, bordered by standard projector-beam headlights. A side view reveals a long, boxy profile that differs from the fluid curves seen in many modern SUVs. Standard fea-tures such as LED taillights and a power liftgate window are seen from the back.

Base SR5 models come with 17-inch alloy wheels, daytime running lights, color-keyed front and rear bumpers, a rear spoiler, mud guards, skid plates, fog lights, heated exterior mirrors and rear privacy glass. Exterior upgrades include a sunroof, 20-inch wheels, special off-road tires, a black front grille and running boards.

The 4Runner's ruggedness extends to its cabin, which is made with materials designed to with-stand challenges. A 40/20/40-split folding second-row seat is standard when the SUV is config-ured to seat five. An optional third-row seat boosts capacity to seven, but keep in mind that ac-commodations in this rearmost row are tight. The Toyota 4Runner provides 9 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the third row, and up to 47.2 cubic feet of capacity is available behind the sec-ond row. With the second row folded, capacity expands to 89.7 cubic feet.

With a base-model 4Runner, you can expect a power-adjustable driver's seat, air conditioning with second-row vents, cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a tilt-and-telescoping steering column. Available features include an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a slid-ing rear cargo deck with an under-floor storage compartment, leather upholstery and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Performance

The 2017 Toyota 4Runner shines when experienced on steep hillsides or in boulder-strewn ra-vines, but it's also civilized enough to provide comfortable transportation on paved roads. A five-speed automatic transmission governs the proceedings. Certain trims come standard with rear-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive is available across the entire lineup.

A 4.0-liter V6 lives under the hood, and it provides 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. The EPA rates the 2017 4Runner at 17/21 mpg city/highway with rear-wheel drive. Opt for four-wheel drive, and the 4Runner is rated at 17/20 mpg.
