The 2017 Tesla Model S is an electrified full-size luxury sedan that can be configured to seat five or seven passengers. Both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are available, and the Model S is sold in 60, 60D, 75, 75D, 100D and P100D trims.

The P100D trim is new for 2017, and it's the quickest choice in the Model S lineup.

Exterior

Exterior

The 2017 Tesla Model S boasts sheet metal that elegantly bridges the past and the future. The sedan's voluptuous lines call to mind classic sports cars, while certain touches, such as the absence of a front grille, lend a futuristic feel. Flared headlights slice across a sculpted front fascia, and deep character lines adorn the sedan's low and sinuous profile.

Base models are equipped with 19-inch wheels, an automatic rear liftgate, retracting exterior door handles, heated power-folding side mirrors with memory settings, daytime running lights and LED headlamps. The list of upgrades includes 21-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, illuminated door handles, LED fog lights, adaptive headlights, windshield-wiper blade defrosters and nozzle heaters for the windshield washer.

Interior

Interior

This Tesla's cabin feels airy and luxurious, and the first two rows offer abundant headroom and legroom for passengers. Materials quality is top notch, and the interior has a thoroughly modern look and feel. Base models seat five, and rear-facing seats are available that up this Tesla's passenger capacity to seven. The 2017 Tesla Model S provides up to 31.6 cubic feet of cargo space.

The list of standard interior amenities includes black cloth upholstery, one-touch power windows, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, power-adjustable heated front seats with memory settings, 60/40-split folding rear seats, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column and dual-zone automatic climate control. You can upgrade your Model S with a premium air filtration system, leather or simulated leather upholstery, LED ambient interior lighting, a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats.

Performance

Performance

Performance is a key strength of the 2017 Tesla Model S. The sedan offers truly breathtaking acceleration, and it comports itself with a nimbleness that belies its size. The Model S comes with battery capacity of either 75 or 100 kWh. Tesla doesn't provide horsepower and torque ratings for its models, but it's estimated that the top P100D trim provides up to 588 horsepower and 920 pound-feet of torque. The 75 trim goes from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, and 75D models make the sprint in 4.2 seconds. With the P100D trim, this distance is traveled in a mere 2.5 seconds. Depending on the trim chosen, the Model S can travel for between 249 and 335 miles on a single charge. The Model S offers mileage of up to 102/105 MPGe city/highway.

The Model S comes standard with equipment that facilitates charging at a rate of 29 miles of range per hour. An optional wall-mounted home charger improves the charging time to the tune of 52 miles of range per hour. Model S owners have access to Tesla's Supercharger network, and the sedan comes standard with 400 kWh of free annual Supercharger credits.
