Ram 1500

Originally known as the Dodge Ram 1500, parent Fiat Chrysler dispensed the Dodge name in 2011 to elevate the Ram marque.

Ram 1500 Overview

The Ram 1500 is available in a variety of cabin, bed and wheelbase configurations. Standard 4x2 models can be upgraded to 4x4 models across the Ram 1500 line. The 1500 name signifies that this is a half-ton pickup truck, while 2500 and 3500 editions are heavy-duty pickups.

Regular, extended (Quad) and crew cab models are available. A standard 6-foot-4-inch bed can be upgraded to an 8-foot bed except in the extended cab model. The roomy crew cab, offering seating for six, has a 5-foot-7-inch bed. Regular cab models seat up to three people and the other body styles hold five or six individuals.

Ram 1500 models have a payload capacity ranging from 1,415 to 1,895 pounds. These trucks have a towing capacity ranging from 4,190 to 9,180 pounds.

There are 10 trim levels available, ranging from the standard Tradesman to the Laramie Limited. Occasionally, special edition models are also released. All Ram 1500 models come with air conditioning, power accessories, two 12-volt outlets, an audio system and a Uconnect infotainment display. Bed rails, a spray in bed liner, a locking tailgate, all-season tires and a full-size spare are included.

Upgrades are many and include a power tilt and telescopic steering column, leather seats, an infotainment system, navigation, zoned climate control, wood trim and other luxury features. Safety features are comprised of a suite of air bags (including side curtain air bags), traction control, trailer sway control, brake assist and hill-start assist. Also available is front and rear park assist and a rear backup camera.

The powertrain choices in later years have brought in new engines and transmissions. A 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine is standard, which makes 305 horsepower and is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This model is rated at 17/25 mpg city/highway. A turbodiesel 3.0-liter V6 making 240 horsepower is also available. Models with this engine are rated at 20/28 mpg city/highway. Also available is a 5.7-liter V8 rated at 395 horsepower, which is paired with a six- or eight-speed automatic transmission. This model is rated as high as 15/22 mpg city/highway.

The Ram 1500 has five competitors: the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Toyota Tundra and the Nissan Titan.
