2017 Porsche Panamera Review

The 2017 Porsche Panamera takes the captivating performance the Porsche brand is known for and blends it with the practical packaging of a hatchback sedan. There's lots of room for cargo, and while the Panamera seats just four passengers, everyone onboard enjoys spacious accommodations.

Porsche's Panamera has been completely redesigned for 2017. The redesign sees the introduction of a new transmission and new engines that offer improved power and fuel efficiency. The Panamera's sheet metal has been reimagined, and it now boasts a sleeker, more coupe-like look.

In addition to the base model, the Panamera's lineup includes 4, 4S and Turbo trims. The Turbo model and all trims with 4 in their descriptors come with all-wheel drive, and an extended-wheelbase body style (Executive) is also offered.

You won't have any trouble identifying the 2017 Panamera as a member of the Porsche family, since the sedan boasts the classic sports-car curves the brand is known for. Standard LED headlights peer from above a sculpted body-colored front bumper, and the sedan's undulating profile reveals etched character lines and standard 19-inch wheels. Standard LED taillights dominate the rear fascia, resting beneath a broad, sloping rear windshield.

Base Panamera models come with daytime running lights, automatic headlights, a panoramic sunroof, an automatic rear hatch, dual single-tube tailpipes and heated side mirrors. Available features include soft-close doors and upgraded LED taillights with partial tinting. Twenty- and 21-inch wheels are available.

The Panamera's cabin emphasizes luxury. There are two bucket seats in the second row, which limits passenger capacity to four. The rear seats feature a folding center armrest and 60/40-split folding backrests. The cargo area offers 17.4 cubic feet of capacity, and with the rear seatbacks folded, this figure increases to 46 cubic feet.

With base models, you get dual-zone automatic climate control, partial leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and heated front seats with eight-way power adjustment. Upgrades include full leather upholstery, 18-way power-adjustable sport seats, heated rear seats and ventilated front seats.

The 2017 Porsche Panamera cruises down the blacktop with supreme authority. Both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are available, and an eight-speed automatic transmission shifts the gears in all models.

Base, 4 and 4 Executive models come with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 good for 330 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque. All 4S and 4S Executive models feature a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 offering 440 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. Turbo and Turbo Executive models come with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 providing 550 horsepower and 567 pound-feet of torque.

The base Panamera gets an EPA-estimated 21/28 mpg city/highway. Panamera 4 and 4S models are rated at 21/27 mpg and 21/28 mpg, respectively, while the Panamera Turbo is rated at 18/25 mpg.
