Introduced in 2015, the Porsche Macan is the manufacturer's entry in the compact crossover segment. The Macan provides luxurious amenities and pleasant ride quality, and it also serves up a satisfying helping of the sporty driving dynamics for which the Porsche brand is known and loved.

Porsche Macan Overview

For decades, the Porsche marque was known exclusively for its sports cars, but the manufacturer achieved broad success in recent years with its Cayenne midsize crossover. The Porsche Macan is the second crossover in the automaker's lineup, and this small luxury SUV distills the brand's hallmarks into a compact and stylish package. The Macan is still in its first generation, and the petite crossover first hit the market for the 2015 model year.

The Porsche Macan is a compact luxury crossover SUV that seats five passengers. It bears certain elements of the iconic styling seen in various Porsche sports cars, reinterpreted for SUV packaging. Porsche's signature cat-eye headlights are present up front, and they sit at the edge of a sculpted hood with deep character lines. In profile, the Macan looks ready to spring forward at a moment's notice. Attractive alloy wheels keep the Porsche Macan in communion with the pavement.

When the model was first launched, base models came with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that unspools 340 horsepower. The second engine choice was a turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 that generates 400 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard, and all models are ruled by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The Macan's driving dynamics are distinguished by sharp handling and blistering acceleration. There is plenty there to engage the driver, but it never comes at the expense of ride quality. The Macan comports itself with agreeable smoothness over potholes and bumps.

Within its doors, the Macan provides a cabin that's opulent and modern. Sporty design cues remind you that you're behind the wheel of a Porsche, and the seats are contoured to provide firm support in sharp turns. Cargo capacity comes up a bit short relative to rivals in this segment, at least in comparison with models like the BMW X3.

Standard features on the Porsche Macan include a power liftgate, power-adjustable front seats, Bluetooth connectivity and a sound system with a CD player. The list of available upgrades includes heated front seats, navigation, a panoramic sunroof and a premium stereo.

In 2016, tri-zone climate control was added as a standard feature on all Porsche Macan crossovers, and a surround-view camera became available. The top trim level added a heated steering wheel as standard equipment.

The 2017 model year saw the addition of two new trim levels to the Macan line, and these trims came with a couple of new engine options: a 252-horsepower four-cylinder power plant and a 360-horsepower V6. Base models added a rearview camera, parking sensors, lane-departure warning and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration as standard equipment.

Porsche's Macan competes with a talented bunch, and its rivals include the Jaguar F-Pace, BMW X3, BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. All these picks are strong contenders, but the Macan is a frontrunner for shoppers seeking world-class Porsche handling and performance.
