2016 Porsche Cayenne Review

The 2016 Porsche Cayenne expertly straddles the line between luxury and performance. Its interior is the embodiment of plush opulence, and it pairs this with the razor-sharp handling you expect from the Porsche marque.

The 2016 Cayenne seats five and comes in seven trims: base, Diesel, S, S E-Hybrid, GTS, Turbo and Turbo S. The GTS and Turbo S models were on hiatus in 2015, and they return for the 2016 model year with increased power. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission are standard across the model line.

This luxury crossover seats five and offers an array of diverse powertrains. The engine lineup includes everything from a plug-in hybrid to a diesel to a turbocharged V8.

Exterior

Exterior

The 2016 Porsche Cayenne places the sleek and supple look of the brand's sports cars in an SUV package. In front, a hood etched with deep character lines overlooks a wide grille and standard xenon headlights. The SUV's profile gives it a look of being perpetually in motion and offers glimpses of the model's standard power-folding heated mirrors, rails-only roof rack and body-colored door handles. In back, a standard rear spoiler overlooks crisp LED taillights and a body-colored bumper.

Base models come with 18-inch wheels, daytime running lights, fog lights and a power tailgate. Upgrades include LED headlights, auto-dimming side mirrors, running boards, skid plates, power rear-window sunshades and a panoramic sunroof. Nineteen-, 20- and 21-inch wheels are available.

Interior

The Cayenne's cabin is premium in every sense of the word. It looks and feels as if it were meticulously hand crafted. However, cargo capacity is slim by crossover standards, and the SUV offers just 23.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats. Folding the rear seats opens up 62.9 cubic feet. S E-Hybrid models offer less room: 20.5 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and 59.7 with the back seats lowered. Turbo models offer the full 23.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats, but just 60.2 cubic feet with these seats lowered.

Base models are equipped with eight-way power-adjustable front seats, a reclining 40/20/40-split rear seat, partial leather upholstery, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone climate control and a cooled glove box. Upgrades include 14-way power-adjustable front seats, full leather upholstery, heated front seats, heated rear seats and ventilated front seats.

Performance

Performance

The 2016 Porsche Cayenne provides superlative handling and maintains its composure in most circumstances. All models feature all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The base model features a 3.6-liter V6 good for 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, and it provides mileage of 19/24 mpg city/highway. The Cayenne Diesel features a turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel V6 offering 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet or torque, and it gets 20/29 mpg.

S models are motivated by a turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 generating 420 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. The GTS also features the 3.6-liter V6, but the engine's output in this model is increased to 440 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque.

Cayenne Turbo models are driven by a turbocharged 4.8-liter V8 good for 520 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, while the Turbo S boosts this engine's output to 570 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.

The plug-in S E-Hybrid is motivated by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that joins forces with an electric motor to generate 416 horsepower and 435 pound-feet of torque. It offers an EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined when powered by gasoline and 47 MPGe combined when powered by the electric motor.

All Cayenne models except the plug-in hybrid can tow up to 7,716 pounds.
