Luxury compacts usually bear an air of restraint, but the 2017 Lexus IS bucks this trend with sheet metal that is muscular and aggressive. Add in its responsive ride quality and tranquil cabin, and the Lexus IS becomes an intriguing choice.

The 2017 Lexus IS is a compact luxury sedan that seats five passengers, and it’s sold in 200t, 300 and 350 trim levels. Buyers can choose between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

For 2017, the Lexus IS gets light cabin and sheet metal upgrades, and a new multimedia system with an available 10.3-inch screen. Notably, the active safety features in the Lexus Safety System+ package have been added as standard equipment across the model line.

The design language for most compact luxury sedans is all about understated refinement, but the 2017 Lexus IS bears sheet metal that makes a much more extroverted statement. In front, scowling LED headlights grimace alongside a tall spindle-shaped grille. Seventeen-inch wheels help the athletic-looking IS grip the pavement, and a rear view reveals standard LED brake lights and taillights.

Base models come with a power sunroof and heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals. Upgrades include 18-inch wheels and auto-dimming side mirrors with memory settings.

The 2017 Lexus IS offers a cabin that’s competently constructed. You’ll find reasonable amounts of room in the front row, but certain rivals offer a more spacious second row. Cargo capacity is modest, and the IS offers just 10.8 cubic feet for your belongings.

Base models come with leatherette upholstery, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, a manually adjustable tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and power door locks and windows,. Models with all-wheel drive come standard with heated front seats. The list of available features includes leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, memory settings for the driver’s seat and steering column and genuine wood or silver performance trim.

The 2017 Lexus IS blends comfortable ride quality with engaging handling. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on rear-wheel-drive models. All-wheel drive is standard on the IS 300 and available on the IS 350, and this feature brings in a six-speed automatic transmission.

The IS 200t is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine good for 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and this power plant has an EPA rating of 22/32 mpg city/highway. With the IS 300, you get a 3.5-liter V6 that generates 255 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque, and this model gets fuel economy ratings of 19/26 mpg.The IS 350 uses the same V6, but it’s been tuned to deliver 306 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. This model has an EPA rating of up to 19/28 mpg.

The 2017 Lexus IS keeps passengers comfortable and entertained with an amenable lineup of technology features. Base models come with HD radio, a 7-inch display screen, an in-dash CD player, satellite radio, USB connectivity, Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio, a 10-speaker sound system and a Scout GPS Link turn-by-turn navigation app. All models come standard with the Lexus Safety System+ suite of active safety features, and this includes a pre-collision system, lane departure alert with steering assist, intelligent high beams and adaptive cruise control.

The list of available features includes navigation, a rearview camera with dynamic gridlines, a 10.3-inch display screen, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and a 15-speaker Mark Levinson sound system.
