The Lexus GS was first introduced for the 1993 model year. This midsize rear- or all-wheel drive luxury sedan provides room for five and is situated between the Lexus IS and LS, sharing midsize duty with the Lexus ES sedan.
2013 to Present: Lexus GS
The fourth-generation Lexus GS was introduced in 2013. Initially, Lexus offered only the GS 350, which is powered by a 306-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 and a six-speed automatic transmission.
An eight-speed automatic transmission was introduced for the 2014 model year, and engine output jumped to 311 horsepower for 2016. Lexus also introduced the GS 200t for 2016. This model is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 241 horsepower.
Lexus offers the GS in GS 200t, GS 350, GS 200t F Sport and GS 350 F Sport editions. The high-performance Lexus GS F is covered separately.
The Lexus GS’ exterior is marked by a more subtle version of the brand’s spindle (hourglass) grille, with upper and lower sections that are split by the front bumper. Like other Lexus models, the wraparound headlamp assemblies are accented by L-shaped LED daytime running lights. The lower section is dressed in sport skirting.
The side profile is marked by restrained upper character lines as well as lower body and rocker panel sculpting. The roofline sweeps back to a raised rear deck. That deck is marked by wraparound combination lights and dual exhaust ports.
Inside, the Lexus GS offers room for five. Beginning in 2016, Lexus increased the cargo volume to 16.2 cubic feet from 14.3 cubic feet.
All models come with leather seats, while NuLuxe leatherette upholstery is also available. Plush and bolstered power-controlled bucket seats are up front; a fixed bench seat with a trunk pass through is at the rear. The sedan’s instrument panel features analog and digital displays. The center console has a color display at the top, followed by an analog clock and audio and climate controls.
Between the seats are the shifter and a drive mode selector with Normal, Economy, Sport and Sport+ modes. A touch pad is also present, enabling the driver to control the color display. All models come with auxiliary and USB inputs, Bluetooth and satellite radio. The Lexus Enform telematics package includes an app suite, voice recognition and destination assist.
F Sport models bring in a mesh front grille, machine-finished wheels, a sport-tuned suspension and variable gear ratio steering. A blind spot monitoring system and rear cross traffic alert are available.
A GS Crafted Line was released for 2015 only. This model comes dressed in an Ultra White exterior and has a two-tone black and red interior. Lexus partnered with Tumi, a high-end producer of travel bags and suitcases, to develop a two-piece duffle bag set to go with the sedan.
