Introduced in 2015, the Land Rover Discovery Sport is a small sport utility vehicle. It is the replacement model for the discontinued LR2 (formerly Freelander) and shares the same platform as the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.
Land Rover Discovery Sport Overview
The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a compact SUV with a standard terrain response system and four-wheel drive.
With the Discovery Sport’s debut, Land Rover has begun reshuffling its product line, assigning the Discovery sub-brand name to its volume models and keeping Range Rover as its aristocratic luxury sub-brand.
Sold in SE, HSE and HSE Luxury trim levels, each Discovery Sport is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 240 horsepower and paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Discovery Sport is rated at 20/26 mpg city/highway and takes premium grade gasoline.
The Land Rover Discovery Sport offers room for up to seven. Standard seating for five passengers can include seven when a 5+2 configuration is chosen. Here, two third-row seating positions are added, offering room for children only.
All Discovery Sport editions come equipped with a clamshell hood, a unique two-bar grille and outboard air intakes. Halogen headlamps and daytime running lights are standard. The rear tail lamps match the wraparound design of the headlamps. Power-folding side mirrors are also standard.
Inside, partial or full leather seats are included. Bucket seats are up front, while the second row sits 2 inches higher and features a 60/40 split-folding bench seat with a reclining feature.
Power accessories are standard and on the technology front the Discovery Sport provides a rearview camera with park assist. This model also comes with up to four 12-volt power points and as many as six USB charging sockets.
The midlevel HSE edition brings in xenon headlamps, front and rear fog lamps, a static panoramic roof, front and rear parking sensors and a power liftgate. The top-of-the-line HSE Luxury provides an 11-speaker audio system, top-end leather seats, a navigation system with an SD card, satellite radio and HD Radio.
The Discovery Sport provides a collection of air bags, including driver and front passenger knee air bags. The terrain response system, which enables the Discovery Sport to handle off-roading, includes traction and stability control, hill ascent and descent control and roll stability control.
