Jeep's Patriot is a compact SUV that seats five passengers, and it's offered with a choice of two engines. Five trims are available: Sport, Sport SE, Latitude, 75th Anniversary Edition and High Altitude.

The Jeep Patriot is unchanged for the 2017 model year, and this is its final year of production.

Exterior

Exterior

An angular shape, seven-slot grille and rounded headlights give the 2017 Patriot some of the same rugged design cues as the iconic 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The overall look is boxy and modern. Standard 16-inch wheels connect the Patriot to the pavement, and roof rails are on hand to facilitate weekend excursions.

Base models come with fog lights and manual exterior mirrors. Upgrades include 17-inch wheels, a sunroof, heated power-adjustable side mirrors, tow hooks, a trailer wiring harness, body sealing for fording streams and rivers. Gray, chrome or bronze exterior accents are also offered.

Interior

Interior

The Patriot has a clean and functional look in the cabin. The interior features Jeep’s signature three-spoke steering wheel and a coverless utility bin that’s built into the passenger side of the dash. The front seats offer amenable accommodations, but legroom is tight in the second row. For versatility, 60/40-split rear seats are standard. With the rear seats in place, the Patriot provides 23 cubic feet of cargo capacity, and this swells to 53.5 cubic feet with the rear seats lowered.

Base models come with manual windows and door locks, a tilting steering-wheel column and cloth seats. Available features include air conditioning, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, power windows and door locks, reclining rear seatbacks and a power-adjustable driver's seat.

Performance

Performance

Ride quality in the 2017 Jeep Patriot can be a bit bouncy if the pavement is rough. Both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual, a six-speed automatic, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and a second CVT tuned for off-road use.

Base models come with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque. There's also a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that increases output to 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. An available Freedom Drive II Off-Road package boosts the Patriot's mountaineering skills with an off-road-friendly CVT and low-range gearing.

EPA ratings for the 2017 Patriot range from 23/30 mpg city/highway with the base engine and manual transmission to 20/23 mpg with the most capable Freedom Drive II four-wheel-drive system.

The standard technology content in the 2017 Patriot includes Bluetooth connectivity, a four-speaker audio system, a USB port, satellite radio and a CD player. Available features include an upgraded stereo with a six-CD changer, an infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touch screen, navigation and a rearview camera. Owners can also order a premium audio system with nine Boston Acoustics speakers, including two that flip down from the tailgate for picnics and the like.
