2014 to Present: Jeep Cherokee
The Jeep Cherokee is a compact SUV that was reintroduced as a 2014 model. The Cherokee is offered in Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk trims.
The base Cherokee comes with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 184 horsepower. A nine-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard and four-wheel drive is optional. Also available is a 3.2-liter V6 engine that produces 271 horsepower. The base Cherokee gets an EPA-estimated 22/31 mpg city/highway, which is typical for a compact SUV.
The Cherokee seats five and comes standard with Bluetooth, a USB port and a touch-screen audio system. Available features include a power liftgate, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, satellite radio, navigation and an 8.4-inch touch-screen infotainment system with smartphone app integration. A rearview camera, rear parking sensors and blind spot monitoring are also available.
Cargo space is on the small side for a compact SUV. There’s 24.6 cubic feet of space behind the rear seat, which expands to 54.9 cubic feet with the second row folded.
Earlier Jeep Cherokee Models
The Cherokee was offered in two- and four-door configurations when it debuted for the 1984 model year.
It was initially available with the choice of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine or a 2.8-liter V6, which produce 105 and 115 horsepower, respectively. The four-cylinder Cherokee was offered with a four-speed manual transmission, while the V6 model was available with a four-speed manual, a five-speed manual or a three-speed automatic. Part-time (Command-Trac) and full-time (Selec-Trac) four-wheel drive systems were offered.
A 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 177 horsepower was offered for the 1987 model year, and a four-speed automatic transmission became available. Cosmetic updated came in 1997, when the Cherokee received updated interior and exterior styling.
The 2001 Cherokee was replaced by the Jeep Liberty, which debuted for the 2002 model year.
