2011 to Present: Jaguar XJ
The modern Jaguar XJ is sold in standard and extended wheelbase editions, the latter model assuming the XJL moniker. It is longer and wider than previous models with a bold grille, sleek headlights, a long hood and strong, upright lines. To the rear are distinctive "cat's claws" taillights and dual exhaust finishers.
The 2011 Jaguar XJ launched with a standard 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 385 horsepower. Supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engines that make 470 and 510 horsepower are available in Supercharged and Supersport models, respectively. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard across the model line.
On 2013 and newer models, the base XJ is powered by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine making 340 horsepower. Rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission are standard and all-wheel drive is optional.
Gas mileage for the V6 model comes in at 16/24 mpg city/highway, while the supercharged V8 model is rated at 15/23 mpg city/highway. All XJ and XJL models take premium grade gasoline.
Jaguar dropped the Supersport trim for the 2014 model year and replaced it with the XJR, which has a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 with an output of 550 horsepower.

Inside, leather is generously spread across the lower dashboard, on door inlays and on the seats. Real wood accents or carbon fiber trim, chrome touches, a Meridian sound system, available reclining rear seats, power side window sun blinds, a rear-seat entertainment package, navigation and power front seats with massage functionality are among the amenities offered.
All XJ models come equipped with a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, six air bags, traction and stability control and electronic brake-force distribution. Adaptive cruise control with forward collision alert is available across the model line.
Earlier Jaguar XJ Models
Jaguar XJ models offered in 2009 and earlier were similarly styled, but the third-generation model (2004 to 2009) incorporated several important changes, including an all-new aluminum chassis that was lighter and stiffer than the previously two generations.
That model featured standard and long wheelbase editions and was powered by naturally aspirated and supercharged 4.2-liter V8 engines making 300 and 400 horsepower, respectively. Those engines were paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Inside, the third-generation Jaguar XJ's cabin offered a traditional design outfitted with supple leather, as well as chrome and burl wood trim. All-wheel drive did not become available until 2011; no 2010 edition was produced.
