The 2018 Hyundai Sonata seats five passengers, and it comes standard with front-wheel drive. Buyers have a choice of three engines, and the Sonata is offered in seven trims: SE, Eco, SEL, Sport, Limited, Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T.

Hyundai has significantly refreshed the Sonata for the 2018 model year, and the sedan benefits from interior and exterior style updates. Also, driver-assistive technologies such as a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert join the Sonata's list of standard features.

Exterior

Exterior

For 2018, the Sonata shows off a dramatic new front-end appearance with sweptback headlights and large, intricately carved fog-light pockets. In profile, strong character lines flow toward sculpted panels at the rear. Base models travel on 16-inch wheels.

The Sonata provides standard features such as power-adjustable exterior mirrors, daytime running lights, a chrome-tipped exhaust outlet and automatic projector-style headlamps. Customers will find more upscale touches in the higher trims, which supply LED headlamps, heated exterior mirrors, LED daytime running lights and LED taillamps. Also notable are the Sonata’s available power sunroof, hands-free power-opening trunk, mirror-mounted turn-signal indicators and 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels. Finally, Sport and 2.0T trims are enhanced by a unique front grille and a rear diffuser.

Interior

Interior

The 2018 Hyundai Sonata comfortably seats five in its roomy cabin. A detailed, asymmetrically designed dashboard makes a big visual impact. A 60/40-split folding rear seat is standard and complements the trunk's 16.3 cubic feet of cargo space.

Base models come with premium cloth seats, power windows and door locks, air conditioning and a multi-function steering wheel with a tilt-and-telescoping column. Owners looking for more content can order leather upholstery, a heated and ventilated front row, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s chair, dual-zone automatic climate control and a heated steering wheel.

Performance

Performance

Ride quality in the 2018 Sonata is pleasant and forgiving, and front-wheel drive is standard. The Sonata distinguishes itself from many rivals by offering three engine choices, all with four cylinders but each providing a different kind of driving experience.

The standard 2.4-liter engine produces 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, which is competitive for the segment. Next, for enhanced fuel-efficiency, the Eco trim has a standard 1.6-liter turbo engine that delivers 178 horsepower, 195 pound-feet of torque and the lineup’s highest EPA ratings. The performance-oriented option is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that makes 245 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. All engines also have specific automatic transmissions, including a six-speed unit for the standard engine, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission in the Eco trim and an eight-speed setup with the 2.0-liter turbo.

Fuel economy starts at 25/36 mpg in the Sonata SE and rises to 28/37 in the Eco trim. With the 2.0-liter engine, the Sonata achieves EPA ratings of 23/32 mpg city/highway.

Technology

Technology

The Sonata's rich assortment of safety and infotainment technology is a strong selling point. All models come with blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane change assist and a rearview camera. Hyundai complements those driver-assistance resources with plenty of infotainment technology. The standard system combines a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, auxiliary input jacks, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay smartphone integration and six audio speakers.

Key options include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, rear parking sensors, satellite radio, HD radio, an 8-inch touch screen, a premium Infinity audio system and wireless device charging.
