2015 to Present: GMC Sierra 2500HD
The GMC Sierra is a full-size pickup truck, available in light- and heavy-duty configurations. The GMC Sierra 2500HD is a heavy-duty model that's available in regular, double and crew cab layouts, with regular or extended beds, and in 4x2 and 4x4 arrangements. This model is twin to the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD.
All models are marked by broad, upright grilles, massive and muscular hoods, utilitarian slab-sided bodies and drop-down tailgates. Various embellishments, including a high-end Denali edition with a corresponding leather interior provide some distinctions. The Sierra 2500HD is available in base (work truck), SLE, SLT and Denali editions.
The third-generation Sierra 2500HD comes standard with a 6.0-liter V8 engine that generates 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. A turbodiesel 6.6-liter V8 engine that makes 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque is available. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. A compressed natural gas version of the 6.0-liter V8 engine is also available, which is rated at 301 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque.
The regular cab models offer room for three, the double cab seats five and the crew cab offers room for five or six. All cabin styles are paired with 8-foot beds, though double and crew cab models also offer a 6-foot-6-inch bed.
All heavy-duty Sierra models come equipped with the latest technologies, including the OnStar telematics system with a 4G LTE wireless hot spot. GMC IntelliLink is the infotainment system, which is available with the base model and standard elsewhere. Every truck comes with multiple plug-ins for electronic storage, interior storage compartments and convenience features. All models come with embedded side step bumpers, an easy lift and drop tailgate, four tie downs and available hooks.
Earlier GMC Sierra 2500HD Models
Since its inception, the Sierra 2500HD has offered V8 gasoline and turbodiesel engines. A 6.0-liter V8 engine making 300 horsepower and paired with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission was one choice for first-generation buyers. GMC also offered an 8.1-liter V8 engine making 340 horsepower and paired this with a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. A 6.6-liter, turbodiesel V8 engine producing 300 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque was also available, and paired with a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission.
The second-generation Sierra 2500HD dropped the larger of the two gasoline engines and continued with the other two engine choices. Both engines were paired with a standard six-speed automatic transmission. Exclusive to the diesel was an available Allison 1000 series transmission that's designed for more rigorous towing assignments. The horsepower and torque ratings for both engines were progressively upgraded throughout the second generation, with the gasoline engine rated as high as 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque and the turbodiesel coming in at 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque. Maximum towing for this truck is 17,900 pounds.
