2017 Ford Flex Review

The current crop of cars and crossovers is known for their curved lines and fluid silhouettes, and this makes the boxy 2017 Ford Flex an instant standout. The Ford Flex offers roomy accommodations, and it's available with a muscular V6.

The 2017 Ford Flex is a crossover wagon that may be configured to seat six or seven passengers. All-wheel drive is available, and the Flex is sold in SE, SEL and Limited trims.

For 2017, the Ford Flex has discontinued a previously optional feature: heated second-row seats with a refrigerator in the middle.

Exterior

Exterior

The Flex's sheet metal has bold angles that give it a unique and vaguely retro look. Automatic halogen headlights blend seamlessly with the wagon's long grille, and standard black beltline molding adorns the vehicle's sides and liftgate. Heated power-adjustable side mirrors offer views of the road, and the Flex rides on standard 17-inch wheels.

Base models come with bright dual exhaust tips, a capless fuel filler, body-colored door handles and integrated blind-spot mirrors. The list of upgrades includes roof-rack side rails, a multi-paneled sunroof, a power liftgate, HID headlights, LED taillights, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding side mirrors and 18-, 19-or 20-inch wheels.

The Ford Flex provides a cavernous cabin, and seating is spacious in all three rows. Behind the third row, you'll find 20 cubic feet of capacity, and with the third row folded, capacity swells to 43.2 cubic feet. Fold the second row and you'll enjoy cargo capacity of 83.2 cubic feet.

Standard features include cloth upholstery, a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a 60/40-split folding second-row bench seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, manual climate control, a manually adjustable tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a 50/50-split folding third-row bench seat. Upgrades include leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a power-adjustable tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.

Performance

Performance

The 2017 Ford Flex offers amenable handling, and it comes with a choice of two engines. The base 3.5-liter V6 provides 287 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque, and it has an EPA rating of up to 16/23 mpg city/highway. There's also an available turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with output of 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, and it achieves mileage of 15/21 mpg. Front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission are standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

The Flex can tow up to 4,500 pounds when properly equipped.

You can upgrade your Flex with satellite radio, a DVD headrest, a 12-speaker sound system, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, navigation, HD radio, adaptive cruise control and forward collision mitigation with automatic braking. Ford's Sync 3 infotainment interface is also available, and it offers a more user-friendly experience than the base Sync system.
