The Ford Econoline was a full-size vehicle available in passenger and cargo van configurations. Introduced in 1961, the Econoline passenger wagon was renamed the E-Series in 2001, while the cargo van versions retained the Econoline name through 2009. Although still available today in cutaway versions for commercial use only, the E-Series was largely replaced by the Ford Transit in 2015.
1992 to 2014: Ford Econoline and E-Series
An all-new Ford Econoline made its debut in 1992, representing the fourth and final generation for this vehicle line.
The fourth-generation Econoline came in standard and extended configurations, but instead of offering more space between the wheels, Ford went with one 138-inch wheelbase, adding a longer tail to XL models to accommodate up to 15 passengers.
The 1992 Ford Econoline offered several engine choices: a 4.9-liter inline-six, a 4.9-liter V8, a 5.8-liter V8, a 7.5-liter V8 and a 7.3-liter diesel. These engines were paired with a four-speed automatic transmission.
Beginning in 1997, Ford replaced most of the Econoline’s engine family. A 4.2-liter V6 became the base engine and was joined by a pair of V8s that displace 4.6 and 5.4 liters. A 6.8-liter V10 was also introduced.
For 2001, Ford renamed the Econoline wagon the E-Series, offering E-150, E-250 and E-350 models, which is similar to the naming convention found in the F-Series truck line.
The Ford E-Series featured two gasoline engine choices for 2002: a 4.2-liter V6 and a 5.4-liter V8. Both engines were paired with four-speed automatic transmissions. With the cargo van, two other gasoline engines and one diesel engine were also available.
The front doors for this model swing out. There’s also a rear side door that swings out and it could be upgraded to a sliding door. Both rear doors pivot out from the corners.
For 2003, Ford refreshed the E-Series, giving it an exterior facelift. The interior was updated to include a glove box, new cup holders and a new instrument panel.
Beginning in 2004, Ford dropped the V6 engine, replacing it with a 4.6-liter V8 already used in the cargo van. In 2005, Ford added electronic throttle control to each engine. For 2006, Ford updated the transmissions, replacing them with electronically controlled units. Stability control was also rolled out, although it was limited to the top-of-the-line E-350 edition only. For 2007, the V10 was discontinued and rear parking sensors were made available.
In 2008, Ford gave the van exterior updates along with an upgraded chassis designed to improve handling and increase load-bearing capacity. For 2009, Ford rolled out a newly designed dashboard and introduced its voice-activated Sync system. A rearview camera was also made available.
For 2012, Ford rolled out new alloy wheels and included an audio input jack. For 2013 and 2014 the E-Series remained unchanged.
