Introduced in 2016, the Fiat 500X is the third model in Fiat’s vehicle line, joining the tiny 500 and the 500L multi-purpose vehicle. The 500X is a subcompact crossover utility vehicle, and twin to the Jeep Renegade SUV.

Fiat 500X Overview

The Fiat 500X has a familiar face, with its circular headlights accented by LED daytime running lights, and a second set of round lights flanking the upper portion of the grille. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available. All-wheel drive models insert cornering headlamps and incorporate a grille guard. A clamshell hood, raised wheel arches, an embedded spoiler, oversized rectangular tail lamps and an available bumper guard are among this model's distinctive features.

Available in five trim levels — Pop, Easy, Trekking, Lounge and Trekking Plus — the Fiat 500X offers two engine and two transmission choices. Standard equipment includes a six-speed manual transmission and a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine making 160 horsepower. The powertrain combination is available on front-wheel drive models only.

A normally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine making 180 horsepower is also available and is the standard engine with the all-wheel drive model. This engine comes paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The turbocharged engine runs best on premium grade gasoline and is EPA-rated at 25/34 mpg city/highway. The larger engine takes regular gasoline and is EPA-rated at 22/31 mpg city/highway.

The interior offers room for five, but is more suitable for four. The driver and front passenger enjoy generous room, but rear-seat passengers may find that legroom is cramped. The similar Fiat 500L offers superior interior room.

All models come equipped with all-season tires, heated sideview mirrors with turn signal indicators, power windows and door locks, air conditioning, a 12-volt auxiliary outlet, a USB port, an auxiliary jack, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat and seven standard air bags.

Cloth seats are standard with premium cloth or leather also available. All models except for the base edition include a leather-wrapped steering wheel with cruise and audio controls. A tilt and telescopic steering column is standard.

Cargo space measures 12.2 cubic feet behind the second-row seat, and is expandable to 32.1 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.

Chief competitors include the Nissan Juke, Chevrolet Trax, Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V and the Subaru XV Crosstrek. Other models to consider include the Kia Soul, Mini Countryman, and the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen.
