Fiat 500L Overview

Have you looked at the Fiat 500 and fell in love it with, only to realize that it is a bit too small for you? Well, Fiat decided to make a bigger version of the 500 for families. The end result is the Fiat 500L, which debuted as a 2014 model year vehicle.

The 500L shares a lot of the traits seen on the standard 500, such as a rounded front end, oval-shaped headlights and a Fiat emblem that's prominently displayed in the middle of the grille. However, the 500L's overall shape is more rectangular than the standard 500. In terms of measurements, the 500L is about 2 feet longer and 6 inches taller and wider than the standard 500. The added dimensions allow the 500L to have a usable back seat and a generous cargo area.

The Fiat 500L seats five and comes with front-wheel drive. All models use a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 160 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard on most of the trim levels, while a six-speed automated manual transmission is optional and standard on the top Lounge trim.

Standard equipment on the 2014 500L lineup includes keyless entry, power locks and windows, a six-speaker audio system with a five-inch touch screen, USB and auxiliary jacks, Bluetooth and 60/40 split-folding rear seats. Higher trims get alloy wheels, leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver's seat and a larger, 6.5-inch touch screen.

For 2015, Fiat replaced the six-speed automated manual transmission with a six-speed automatic on most trims. Fiat also introduced 'Collections' that combines a number of options and equipment from higher trims into smartly priced packages.

The Fiat 500L can be cross-shopped with a number of small wagons and crossovers. Its most direct competitors include the Kia Soul, Mini Countryman and Nissan Juke.
