The 2017 Buick Encore is a compact SUV that seats five passengers, and it's sold in 1SV, Preferred, Sport Touring, Preferred II, Essence and Premium trims. Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are available, and all models are governed by a six-speed automatic transmission.

For 2017, the Encore gets revised front and rear fascias and interior updates. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is now standard, and Ebony Twilight Metallic, White Frost Metallic and Black Cherry Metallic have been added to the list of available exterior colors.

Exterior

Exterior

The Encore's sheet metal has a modern look that's right at home on city streets. Sleek character lines span the hood, and the front fascia features angled halogen headlights and a bold shield-like grille. The Encore's profile is distinguished by a sloping roofline and a rising beltline, and the SUV rides on standard 18-inch alloy wheels. In rear, the Encore features a tall hatch and a stainless-steel exhaust tip.

The list of standard features includes LED daytime running lights, body-colored door handles, a roof-mounted luggage rack, heated power-adjustable side mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators and a rear wiper. You can upgrade your Encore with LED headlights, a power tilt-sliding sunroof and front fog lamps.

Interior

Interior

The Encore's front row gives passengers a high seating position that offers clear views of the road. The cabin is home to pleasing design and premium materials, with lots of soft-touch surfaces. Rear seats provide decent legroom for adults. In back, the Encore delivers 18.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the rear seats, and this figure expands to 48.4 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks folded.

The list of standard equipment includes air conditioning, a 60/40-split folding rear bench seat, a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and power windows and door locks. Available upgrades include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a six-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control and memory presets for the driver's seat.

Performance

Performance

The 2017 Buick Encore is tuned for comfort, and its suspension does an excellent job of keeping bumps and harshness out of the cabin. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is offered on all models but the base trim.

Base models are motivated by a 1.4-liter four-cylinder power plant that delivers 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. A version of this engine that's tuned for higher output is also available, and it provides 153 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. The Encore has an EPA rating of up to 27/33 mpg city/highway.
