BMW X4

The BMW X4 defies easy description or categorization. It is one part utility vehicle, another part performance sedan with the expected BMW design and technologies weaved in.

BMW X4 Overview

Introduced for 2015, the BMW X4 is closely resembles the BMW X6. Both models are described by the manufacturer as a “sports activity coupe.”

Sharing underpinnings with the BMW X3, the X4 is a hatchback with a sloping roof line and an aggressive front fascia to match. This all-wheel drive utility vehicle is sold in xDrive28i and xDrive35i editions. The first choice is outfitted with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 240 horsepower. The xDrive35i comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine rated at 300 horsepower. Both engines come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting capabilities.

The standard model gets an EPA-estimated 20/28 mpg city/highway; the xDrive35i is rated 19/27 mpg. Both models require premium grade gasoline.

Each model is sold with various packages and options available. All models feature a sporty interior with room for up to five. However, the rear seat is tight and particularly limited for taller passengers due to the sloping roofline. That split-folding rear seat is of a 40/20/40 design.

Power accessories, a Harman Kardon audio system, BMW Apps and iDrive infotainment with a touchpad are standard. Each model also makes available a full color head-up display, a surround-view camera and a suite of important safety features including frontal collision warning and lane departure warning.

Options and package upgrades bring in heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, retractable headlight washers and heated rear seats. Automatic high beams and adaptive full LED lights are part of a lighting package. An M Sport package brings in brushed aluminum trim, burl walnut trim, an anthracite headliner and a sport steering wheel. Also available is dynamic damper control and 19-inch light-alloy wheels with all-season run-flat tires.

Cargo room is small, with just 17.7 cubic feet of standard storage space. That area nearly triples to 49.4 cubic feet when the back seat is folded.

Besides cross shopping the BMW X3, shoppers might consider the Audi Q5, Porsche Macan, Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class and the Land Rover Discovery Sport.
