The 2017 BMW i8 is a two-door exotic sports car that seats four. The i8 is a plug-in hybrid, and it comes in a single well-equipped trim.

For 2017, the BMW i8 adds a new Protonic Red Edition package, which includes unique wheels, special seats and Protonic Red exterior paint.

The 2017 BMW i8 isn't for wallflowers, and its sheet metal is sure to attract attention. Its sinuous lines and taut surfaces give the car a thoroughly futuristic look, and its standard scissor doors underline its sporty nature. The i8's doors and hood are crafted from lightweight aluminum, and the car speeds along on standard 20-inch wheels.

The list of standard features includes LED headlights and brake lights, LED daytime running lights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated power-folding side mirrors, high-gloss black mirror caps and a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic roof. BMW's Laserlight headlamps are offered as an option, and these headlights use laser diodes to generate light that's almost four times brighter than that of an LED.

The i8's cabin is attractive, and it comes decked with recycled materials that are a fitting match for its green hybrid powertrain. The front seats are roomy, but the tiny rear seats are best reserved for luggage and personal items. In back, the i8's trunk provides 4.7 cubic feet of cargo space.

Standard features include heated six-way power-adjustable front seats, leather upholstery, a three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control and a tilt-and-telescoping steering column. The list of interior options includes blue seatbelts and perforated upholstery.

Performance

Performance

On twisting mountain roads, the 2017 BMW i8 delivers the sharp handling you expect from an exotic, but this sports car is also comfortable enough to serve as a pleasant daily driver. Power comes from a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine teamed with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack, and this setup provides total output of 357 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive is standard. The gas engine is governed by a six-speed automatic, while the electric motor uses a two-speed automatic transmission. Charging takes 3.5 hours with a 120-volt outlet and 1.5 hours with a 240-volt charger.

The i8 can travel for up to 15 miles solely on electric power, and it has an EPA rating of 76 MPGe with both the gas engine and electric motor factored in. When using just the gas engine, the i8 achieves mileage of 28 mpg combined city/highway.
