2015 Volvo V60 Cross Country vs. V60 Wagon

At first glance, the Volvo V60 Cross Country may have trouble making a case for itself. This 2015.5 model starts at $41,000, which is $5,250 more than the base Volvo V60 wagon. While that may seem like a lot for a model with a bit more ground clearance, the V60 Cross Country also adds a number of features that may appeal to a wide range of buyers.

Here’s a look at some of the key differences, as well as the extra equipment that you’ll get if you choose the Cross Country model.

What Comes Standard: Volvo V60

carfax-volvo-v60-0001The base Volvo V60 is a wagon that comes with standard features that include front-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 240 horsepower.

All models come with a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio and Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen.

What Comes Standard: Volvo V60 Cross Country

2015-Volvo-V60-Cross-Country(5)If you opt for the V60 Cross Country, you’ll get a wagon with a raised ride height that results in 7.9 inches of ground clearance (2.6 inches more than the regular V60 wagon). You’ll also benefit from standard all-wheel drive and an engine that offers a bit more power. The V60 Cross Country’s turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine offers 250 horsepower. You can get this engine in the regular V60 by choosing an all-wheel drive model, which will add $1,500 to the bottom line. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard on both all-wheel drive V60 models.

On top of the V60 wagon’s standard interior features, the Cross Country edition also includes rear parking sensors, leather upholstery and navigation.

Our Test Volvo V60 Cross Country

Choosing this trim adds $3,650 to the base price, as well as features that include a Harman Kardon audio system, push-button start, a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning (with full automatic braking), pedestrian and cyclist detection and a road sign information system.

Options on our test car included blind spot monitoring ($925), speed sensitive steering ($325), wood trim ($400), metallic paint ($560) and a Climate package ($1,550) that adds heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel. All said, our V60 Cross Country has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $49,350 (after a $940 destination charge).

2015-Volvo-V60-Cross-Country(36)The V60 Cross Country’s turbocharged five-cylinder engine had enough power for most driving situations, though there is a bit of lag at times. This was particularly noticeable at cruising speeds when I needed to merge or pass slower-moving traffic on the highway. However, there is a workaround. Putting the car in Sport mode results in better throttle response and more immediate passing power, making it easy to overcome slower-moving traffic.
Handling is controlled and the ride is comfortable, though the V60 Cross Country falls slightly short of being sporty. With its lower ride height, the regular V60 wagon likely offers better cornering ability, and if you want more power it’s available as a T6 AWD R-Design model that has 75 more horsepower.

Which One Should I Choose?

The base V60 is $5,250 less expensive than the V60 Cross Country, but the pricing gap narrows as you add features like all-wheel drive, leather upholstery and navigation. To get these you’ll be looking at a V60 T5 AWD Premier, which starts at $39,150, or $1,850 less than the V60 Cross Country.

For many, the additional ground clearance and slightly higher seating position is probably worth the extra cash, especially if you plan to do some light off-roading or live in an area that gets a lot of snow.

Both the V60 and the V60 Cross Country also compete with a number of capable wagons, including the 2015 Audi Allroad and the BMW 3-Series Sports Wagon. On the less expensive end of the spectrum there are also models like the 2015 Subaru Outback to consider. Still, the V60 Cross Country should be a good fit for buyers who are looking for a premium wagon with standard all-wheel drive and an impressive set of high-tech safety features.
