Pool of Hybrid Minivans Small But Growing

Roomy cabins and comfortable seats make minivans a popular choice for families. As more automakers add hybrid powertrains to their portfolios, these practical people-movers no longer need to be gas-guzzlers.

There are two hybrid minivans available today: the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and the Toyota Sienna. Both boast a gentle ride and many of the comforts and amenities expected in a modern minivan.

The photos and descriptions below are of new vehicles from the 2021 model year. Many cars stick with the same design for years; while new features or trims may be added over the years, you can save thousands of dollars buying a nearly identical model when you shop used. Just be aware: Hybrid minivans are a recent development, so if that’s a priority, make sure any used van you’re considering has a hybrid powertrain.

Each vehicle description includes information about the used model years that might interest you. We’ve also included a link to Carfax’s used car listings. Each listing at Carfax comes with a free Carfax Vehicle History Report.

Toyota Sienna

  • MSRP: $34,460
  • Fuel economy: 36 mpg combined

The Sienna was fully redesigned for 2021. It sports a modern look, with its trademark honeycomb grille and available sporty black accents and wheels — plus a new hybrid powertrain.

As part of the minivan’s 2021 redesign, Toyota swapped the Sienna’s V6 gasoline engine for a 245-horsepower hybrid system, consisting of a 4-cylinder gas engine and two electric motors. The Sienna excels when driving around town, but it struggles to gain speed when passing on the highway. Front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) are available.

Available in five trims – LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum – the refreshed Sienna showcases an updated interior trimmed with soft plastics and quality materials. Its spacious cabin can accommodate eight people on comfortable, well-cushioned seats.

The Sienna’s base LE model has cloth upholstery and an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. Move up one trim to the XLE and you’ll get second-row captain’s chairs, heated front seats, and synthetic leather upholstery. Higher trims come with luxuries such as genuine leather upholstery, heated second-row seats, and captain’s chairs with built-in ottomans.

With 33.5 cubic feet of space behind the third row, there’s plenty of room to fit a stroller and several bags of groceries. If you need more space, folding the rear seats into the floor opens up 75.2 cubic feet in the cargo hold. With both rows folded, the Sienna provides 101 cubic feet, but because you can’t completely remove the second-row seats or fold them into the floor, it can be difficult to load large items.

All models come with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a WiFi hotspot, and a 9-inch touchscreen. Wireless device charging, navigation, and an 11.6-inch rear-seat entertainment system are optional.

The Sienna was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It comes with a long list of standard advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS), including automatic emergency braking,  road sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights. Upper trims add a head-up display, parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system.

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

  • MSRP: $40,620
  • Fuel economy: 82 MPGe combined city/hwy

Smooth and refined, the Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid minivan features a V6 engine and two electric motors, producing a total of 260 horsepower — more than the Sienna Hybrid. The Pacifica Hybrid accelerates quickly and is powerful enough for most driving situations.

The minivan seats seven on cloth upholstery. Buyers can upgrade to leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, and hands-free power-sliding rear doors.

There’s plenty of room for groceries and luggage in the Pacifica, with 32.3 cubic feet of space behind the third row. The third row Stow ‘n Go seats fold flat into the floor to make a total of 87.5 cubic feet behind the second-row captain’s chairs. With both rows of seats folded, the Pacific Hybrid has a generous maximum cargo capacity of 140.5 cubic feet. That’s 40 cubic feet more than the Sienna offers.

Standard ADAS features include rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring. Front parking sensors, park assist, and a surround-view parking system are optional on upper trims.
