What Hybrid Minivans Are Available?

There are two hybrid minivans available in 2022: the Toyota Sienna and the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Both have smooth rides and the amenities expected in a modern minivan, but there are key differences between them. Cost and technology are the biggest: The Pacifica Hybrid costs nearly $15,000 more than the Sienna. In return, the Pacifica Hybrid has an innovative plug-in hybrid powertrain that can go up to 32 miles on electricity alone.

  • Price: $34,710
  • Fuel Economy: 36 mpg*
  • Powertrain: 245-horsepower gas-electric hybrid
  • What We Like: Top fuel economy; great crash-test scores; available all-wheel drive (AWD); good price
  • What We Don’t: Less power and overall cargo space

As part of the minivan’s 2021 redesign, Toyota swapped the Sienna’s V6 gasoline engine for a 245-horsepower hybrid system consisting of a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with 2 electric motors. With front-wheel drive (FWD), the minivan is EPA-rated at 36 mpg in combined city and highway driving; with AWD – which the Sienna is one of only two minivans to offer – it gets 35 combined mpg.

The way Toyota packed its hybrid powertrain into the Sienna limits overall cargo space; the minivan has a class-worst 101 cubic feet. And because you can’t completely remove the second-row seats or fold them into the floor, it can be difficult to load large items.

Available in five trims – LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum – the Sienna showcases a premium interior trimmed with soft plastics and quality materials. Its spacious cabin can accommodate 8 people on comfortable, well-cushioned seats.

The Sienna’s base LE model has cloth upholstery and an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. Move up one trim to the XLE and you’ll get second-row captain’s chairs, heated front seats, and synthetic leather upholstery. Higher trims come with luxuries such as genuine leather upholstery, heated second-row seats, and captain’s chairs with built-in ottomans.

All models come with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and a 9-inch touchscreen. Wireless device charging, navigation, and an 11.6-inch rear-seat entertainment system are optional.

The Sienna was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It comes with a long list of standard advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS), including automatic emergency braking, road sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights. Upper trims add a head-up display, parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system.

Shopping for a Used Sienna?

The Toyota Sienna has only been available as a hybrid since its redesign in the 2021 model year; 2021 and 2022 models are identical. Older Siennas have much larger cargo areas and more powerful engines but they aren’t hybrids and aren’t nearly as fuel-efficient.

2. 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

  • Price: $48,478
  • Fuel Economy: 82 MPGe (gas & electric); 30 mpg (gas only)*; 32-mile electric range
  • Powertrain: 260-horsepower plug-in gas-electric hybrid
  • What We Like: Tons of features; it is the only plug-in hybrid minivan; 140.5 cu ft of cargo space
  • What We Don’t: Expensive; not available with many of the Pacifica’s best features, such as Stow ‘n Go or AWD

The Pacifica tops our overall ranking of minivans. So why do we list it second here? It comes down to cost. The Pacifica Hybrid has a starting price of nearly $50,000, compared to the $35,000 starting price of the Toyota Sienna. While it’s true that the Pacifica boasts an innovative plug-in hybrid system that lets it go up to 32 miles on electricity alone, the added cost is substantial enough that the Sienna is the better hybrid minivan for most people.

The Pacifica plug-in hybrid minivan features a V6 engine and two electric motors producing a total of 260 horsepower — 15 more than the Sienna. The Pacifica Hybrid accelerates quickly and is powerful enough for most driving situations.

There’s plenty of room for groceries and luggage in the Pacifica, with 32.3 cubic feet of space behind the third row. The third-row Stow ‘n Go seats fold flat into the floor to make a total of 87.5 cubic feet behind the second-row captain’s chairs. With both rows of seats folded, the Pacific Hybrid has a generous maximum cargo capacity of 140.5 cubic feet. That’s 40 cubic feet more than the Sienna offers.

The minivan seats seven and boasts leather upholstery, heated front seats, and power-sliding rear doors. All models come with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen. Standard ADAS features include rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring.

Chrysler introduced the Pacifica Hybrid minivan in 2017. You’ll find similar features and styling in 2017-2022 models. The 2021 Pacifica Hybrid received slightly updated styling, more standard ADAS features, and an upgraded infotainment system, and the 2022 continues on without many changes.
