We Rank the Best New Small Luxury Sedans

Small luxury cars offer the best blend of performance, technology, and comfort for your money. We’ve ranked every small luxury sedan available, both new and used. Shopping for a used car can mean getting a nearly identical vehicle for a lot less money. This article only covers compact and subcompact luxury sedans. In separate articles, we rank the Cheapest Luxury Cars and Best Small Luxury SUVs.

How We Ranked These Small Luxury Sedans

1. 2024 Audi A5 Sportback

2022 Audi A5 Sportback
2024 Audi A5 Sportback / Credit: Audi
  • Price: $45,500
  • What We Like: Sleek fastback styling; large trunk; variety of engines; premium feel; good mpg; good crash-test scores
  • What We Don’t: Not as much rear headroom as rivals; weak base engine; above-average price

The Audi A5 Sportback is both visually appealing and highly versatile. Unlike other small luxury vehicles in the segment, the A5 Sportback has a hatchback liftgate for extra storage, though it could use more rear-seat headroom. It also earns good fuel economy and performs well in crash tests.

Its standard 201-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is underpowered. Look to the A5 45 trim or the high-performance S5 and RS 5 for better performance.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with a few advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS).

Shopping for a Used A5?

Audi introduced the A5 Sportback for 2018. Since then, the vehicle has received minor additions and changes. Models from 2018 to 2023 will look similar and have similar features to the 2024 model shown above.

2. 2024 Genesis G70

2024 Genesis G70
2024 Genesis G70 / Credit: Genesis
  • Price: $41,500
  • What We Like: Great price; a nice mix of comfort and performance; good crash-test scores
  • What We Don’t: Mediocre mpg

Genesis may not have the same brand recognition as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, or Lexus, but the South Korean automaker makes high-end vehicles that are excellent value propositions. The G70 earns top-notch crash-test ratings and delivers a welcome balance between comfort and performance.

Power comes from a 300-horsepower turbo-4, though a 365-horsepower twin-turbo V6 is available. Both provide lively acceleration, but neither returns impressive fuel economy. Inside, the G70 features a handsome design with high-quality materials and roomy front seats. However, the same can’t be said about the tight rear seats or the small trunk.

Despite its low price, the G70 has a long list of intuitive technology and ADAS features as standard.

Shopping for a Used G70?

The Genesis G70 got all-new styling in 2022 and a more-powerful base engine for 2024. However, the model dates back to 2019. Used models will look different but will still offer solid value and performance.

3. 2024 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

  • Price: $46,950
  • Fuel Economy: 25-29 mpg*
  • What We Like: Elegant interior; comfortable ride
  • What We Don’t: Above-average price

The C-Class is one of the more expensive options in the small luxury car segment. However, the vehicle does have one of the nicest interiors: High-quality materials and excellent fit and finish give it a high-end feel that competitors can’t match. It also delivers a more comfortable ride than many of its rivals.

The C-Class’ standard 255-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine has mild-hybrid technology that makes it quicker off the line, though it doesn’t return the best fuel economy. Instead, the setup allows this small car to deliver up to 20 extra horsepower with short bursts of electric power. The AMG models of the C-Class, the C43 and C63, use a heavily boosted version of the 4-cylinder engine.

Shopping for a Used C-Class?

Mercedes redesigned the C-Class for 2022 and added new AMG models for 2023. The C-Class Convertible was discontinued following the 2023 model year. The previous generation debuted for the 2015 model year. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay became available in 2018 and standard in 2019. Additionally, 2019 saw updated styling and more ADAS features.

4. 2024 BMW 3 Series

2023 BMW 3 Series
2024 BMW 3 Series / Credit: BMW
  • Price: $44,500
  • What We Like: The base model gets excellent fuel economy, powerful engine lineup, spacious
  • What We Don’t: Not as performance-oriented as older 3 Series

The 3 Series is offered with a choice of three powertrains, starting with a 255-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine coupled to a remarkably smooth 8-speed automatic. Green-minded luxury car shoppers could be swayed by the plug-in hybrid version, which boasts 288 horsepower and an electric-only driving range of 23 miles. Then there’s the boisterous M340i, motivated by a 382-horsepower turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

Optional all-wheel drive (AWD) gives the 3 Series added grip on slippery roads, and the updated cabin features a digital gauge display and infotainment system that presents one seamless screen to the driver. It’s sharp-looking and easy to use, plus the 3 Series comes with standard tech touches, including wireless smartphone connectivity, a Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, and satellite radio.

Shopping for a Used 3 Series?

The seventh-generation BMW 3 Series was introduced for the 2019 model year. In 2020, it gained Apple CarPlay as standard equipment, and in 2021 Android Auto became standard. It got a midcycle refresh in 2023, but any model from 2019-2024 will be similar.

5. 2024 Audi A4

2020 Audi A4
2024 Audi A4 / Credit: Audi
  • Price: $41,200
  • What We Like: Well-rounded comfort and performance; top build quality; good crash-test scores
  • What We Don’t: Weak base engine

The A4 is a jack of all trades, though its standard turbo-4 engine is weak for the class. If you want something more on par with rivals, you’ll have to upgrade to the 261-horsepower version of the engine. Regardless, this Audi provides a welcome balance of comfort and performance and earns strong crash-test ratings.

On the inside, the A4 has a high-end, well-built cabin. Not only does it have a comfortable and streamlined design, but the sedan comes with a variety of standard features you won’t find in some competitors, including leather upholstery, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 10-speaker audio system.

The A4 isn’t as sporty as its rivals on the road, but it’s smooth and comfortable. One major upside is its standard all-wheel drive (AWD).

Shopping for a Used A4?

The current generation of the Audi A4 dates back to 2017, though the sedan received updated exterior styling and a new infotainment system for 2020. Beyond those two things, the used models will be similar to the 2024 version.

6. 2024 Acura Integra

2023 Acura Integra
2024 Acura Integra / Credit: Acura
  • Price: $31,500
  • What We Like: Very low price; manual transmission; good mpg; agile handling
  • What We Don’t: Rivals have more horsepower; not as luxurious inside as competitors

The Integra name is familiar to Acura fans who remember the original energetic generations sold from 1986 through 2001. The rekindled 2023 Integra is a solid bargain for anyone searching for an agile and fuel-conscious small luxury sedan.

Under the hood is a 200-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that sends power to the front wheels via a standard continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Enthusiasts will love that the A-Spec and Technology packages include an honest-to-goodness manual transmission. The Integra also has a roomy 24.3 cubic foot trunk. Looking for more power? The new 2024 Integra Type S comes equipped with 320 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Shopping for a Used Integra?

In 2023, the Acura Integra made its triumphant return after a hiatus of more than two decades. The third-generation Integra was offered from 1994 until 2001 and has become a modern collectible, so it’s hard to find on the used market. The same can be said for the new Integra since it has only been made since 2023. For 2024, Acura has added the high-performance Type S model.

7. 2024 Audi A3

2022 Audi A3
2024 Audi A3 / Credit: Audi
  • Price: $35,400
  • What We Like: Upscale design; agile; good crash-test scores; great mpg; lively S3 and RS 3 versions
  • What We Don’t: Interior controls can be overwhelming

The A3 is refreshingly well-rounded. It boasts a premium cabin with room for five people. On the open road, the A3 has a good mix of athleticism and comfort, making driving enjoyable. The base engine, a 201-horsepower turbo-4, returns good fuel economy due in part to its mild-hybrid system. For more power, opt for the performance-oriented S3 or the high-performance RS 3.

The A3 comes equipped with a touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a few key ADAS features. The interior tech can take some time to figure out because of the complicated controls.

Shopping for a Used Audi A3?

Audi last redesigned the A3 for the 2022 model year, and it hasn’t changed much since. Used versions from the previous generation (2015 to 2020) have different styling but are otherwise similar. There was no 2021 model.

8. 2024 Acura TLX

2024 Acura TLX Type S
2024 Acura TLX Type S / Credit: Acura
  • Price: $45,000
  • What We Like: Sharp handling; lively Type S model; excellent crash-test scores
  • What We Don’t: Mediocre mpg; not as luxurious as rivals

The Acura TLX is one of the sportier options in the entry-level luxury sedan segment, featuring aggressive styling and athletic handling. Under the hood, the TLX has a 272-horsepower turbo-4 engine that’s powerful but returns below-average gas mileage. The Type S model gets a 355-horsepower V6 and other performance upgrades.

The TLX separates itself from the pack with a lengthy list of standard tech features. Keep in mind, though, that while the TLX has a lot of standard tech features, the car’s infotainment system has tricky controls and can be difficult to use.

Shopping for a Used TLX?

The TLX receives a minor styling refresh and a new infotainment system for 2024. Besides that, the TLX hasn’t changed much since the current generation debuted in 2021. The previous generation ran from 2015 to 2020, with models from 2018 and 2020 featuring an updated exterior design.

9. 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA

2021 Mercedes-Benz CLA
2024 Mercedes CLA / Credit: Mercedes
  • Price: $39,350
  • What We Like: Sleek styling; lively engines; good mpg
  • What We Don’t: Pricier than most luxury cars its size

The CLA is expensive for an entry-level luxury car (the larger C-Class doesn’t cost much more). Its sleek, coupe-like styling gives it a unique look among inexpensive luxury sedans. It’s handsome inside, but its rear seats and trunk are small for the class.

An eager and fuel-efficient 221-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is standard. If you want more power, there’s the AMG 45, which boasts a 382-horsepower engine. The CLA handles well, but its ride quality is on the firmer side.

The CLA features Mercedes’ latest infotainment system, smartphone connectivity, and a handful of ADAS features.

Shopping for a Used CLA?

The current generation came to market in 2020, revealing a more upscale, high-tech, and elegantly styled version of the sedan. The previous generation ran from 2014 to 2019. You could save money by shopping for an older model, but make sure it has the features you need.

10. 2024 Volvo S60

2023 Volvo S60 Recharge T8
2024 Volvo S60 / Credit: Volvo
  • Price: $42,000
  • What We Like: Great mpg; top crash-test scores; handsome styling; available plug-in hybrid option
  • What We Don’t: Mediocre engines

This small Volvo sedan features eye-catching styling, a spacious and modern interior, and a host of standard technology and ADAS features.

Unlike most competitors in the small luxury segment, the S60 does not attempt to be sporty – it’s all about comfort. While most classmates sit on rear-wheel-drive platforms, the S60 is front-wheel drive (FWD).

The S60’s engine lineup isn’t impressive, but its standard turbo-4, which has a mild-hybrid system, feels peppy enough as a daily driver. It also returns fantastic fuel economy, and there’s a plug-in hybrid option.

Shopping for a Used S60?

The current generation of the Volvo S60 debuted in the 2019 model year. Volvo gave the S60 a slight refresh in 2023, but models from 2019-2023 will have the same basic design as the 2024.

11. 2024 Lexus IS

2022 Lexus IS
2024 Lexus IS / Credit Lexus
  • Price: $41,235
  • What We Like: Excellent reputation for reliability; V8 model available; great crash-test scores
  • What We Don’t: So-so mpg; not as luxurious as rivals

Like many Lexus vehicles, the IS has a reputation for superb reliability and earning terrific crash-test ratings. The IS is not as upscale as other small luxury cars, and its second-row seats are tight. The IS also has a relatively weak base engine that’s not fuel-efficient. That said, this Lexus has exceptional build quality and rides and handles quite well. If you’re not interested in splurging for the 472-horsepower V8, a 311-horsepower V6 is available.

Notable standard features in the IS include a touchscreen, a touchpad controller, smartphone connectivity, and a full suite of ADAS features.

Shopping for a Used IS?

Lexus lightly refreshed the IS exterior for 2021, and IS models from 2014 to 2020 will look similar. Lexus made many safety features standard in the 2017 model year, making cars from that year forward better options on the used market. A V8 engine became available in 2022.

12. 2024 Cadillac CT4

2022 Cadillac CT4
2024 Cadillac CT4 / Credit: Cadillac
  • Price: $39,495
  • What We Like: Agile; powerful engine lineup
  • What We Don’t: Not as luxurious as rivals; tight interior

The CT4’s main strengths include its strong lineup of engines and athletic handling. It comes standard with a powerful turbo-4 engine that makes 237 horsepower, impressive for the segment.

This Caddy isn’t as nice inside as its rivals and is short on space. The front seats offer plenty of room and comfort, but the second row is tight. The trunk is also small for the class.

The CT4 comes with Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system, which includes a touchscreen and wireless smartphone compatibility. A multitude of ADAS features come standard.

Shopping for a Used CT4?

The Cadillac CT4 debuted in 2020. Cadillac added more standard features in 2021, 2022 and 2023, but all CT4 models have similar styling, new or used.

13. 2024 Cadillac CT5

2021 Cadillac CT5 Premium Luxury Exterior
2024 Cadillac CT5 / Credit: Cadillac
  • Price: $44,095
  • What We Like: Great price; powerful available engines
  • What We Don’t: Most compelling models are expensive; not as luxurious as rivals

The small CT5 sedan is well-priced and comes packed with standard features, including a large touchscreen, wireless device charging, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The CT5 also comes with several ADAS features. What’s more, it offers exceptional rear legroom, though, unlike its competitors, the CT5 has cheap plastic scattered throughout the cabin.

The CT5 also lags behind the competition when it comes to base power. Available engines include a powerful twin-turbo V6 and a ridiculous supercharged V8.

Shopping for a Used CT5?

Cadillac introduced the CT5 as an all-new model for 2020. Any model from 2020 to 2023 will look similar to the 2024 above.

14. 2024 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe

2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe
2024 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe / Credit: BMW
  • Price: $48,300
  • What We Like: Like a sleeker version of the 3 Series
  • What We Don’t: Not as spacious as the 3 Series; pricey

The 4 Series Gran Coupe is a more practical option than the 4 Series coupe or convertible. We see it as a sleeker version of the BMW 3 Series. It has more cargo space than just about any other car in the class. That said, it doesn’t have as much passenger space as its 3 Series sibling, thanks to small rear doors and a tight second row.

This BMW luxury small car is powered by a turbocharged 4-cylinder base engine that makes 255 horsepower. A 382-horsepower turbocharged 6-cylinder is available. Getting the more potent powertrain requires stepping up to the pricey M440i xDrive Gran Coupe.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe is equipped with a 12.3-inch digital gauge and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, as well as smartphone connectivity and a wealth of ADAS features.

Shopping for a Used 4 Series?

The 4 Series Gran Coupe was completely redesigned for the 2022 model year. The Gran Coupe body style wasn’t available for 2021 but was available from 2015 through 2020. The 2024 model year saw a new infotainment system.

15. 2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia

2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia
2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia / Credit: Alfa Romeo
  • Price: $43,340
  • What We Like: Athletic; bonkers Quadrifoglio trim
  • What We Don’t: So-so mpg; poor reputation for reliability

The Giulia is a luxury vehicle for enthusiasts. With Italian flair and one of the more powerful standard engines in its class, there’s nothing on the market quite like the Giulia. That exquisite design and performance do, however, carry a high price tag. Moreover, this Alfa Romeo has a poor track record for reliability.

Performance is what the Giulia does best. It’s powered by a turbo-4 engine that makes 280 horsepower. Opt for the Quadrifoglio trim, and you get a ridiculous 505-horsepower twin-turbo V6. Neither engine is a fuel sipper. Around corners, the Giulia has impressively agile handling, excellent steering feel, and controlled body roll.

The Giulia’s standard infotainment system isn’t as large as the ones found in some of its competitors, but it’s easy to use and has crisp graphics. Smartphone app integration and multiple ADAS features are standard.

Shopping for a Used Giulia?

Alfa Romeo Giulia models from 2017 to 2024 look similar and have similar features. You could save money by choosing a used model, but there are a few things to be aware of: Android Auto and Apple CarPlay didn’t become available until 2018, and 2020 versions got an updated infotainment system. In 2024, the Giulia received minor updates to its headlight and taillight designs.

16. 2024 Infiniti Q50

2022 Infiniti Q50
2024 Infiniti Q50 / Credit: Infiniti
  • Price: $43,050
  • What We Like: Powerful Red Sport model
  • What We Don’t: Not as luxurious as rivals; aging design

The Q50 has one of the most powerful standard engines in the class: a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that makes 300 horsepower. The Red Sport model has a 400-horsepower version of the V6.

The Q50’s cabin is dated and can’t match other luxury competitors in terms of quality or design, but it offers plenty of space. If you regularly have passengers in your vehicle, the Q50 is one of the more comfortable options for them.

Standard features include dual touchscreens, a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. A long list of ADAS features is also standard.

Shopping for a Used Q50?

Infiniti introduced the Q50 as an all-new model for 2014. Since then, the Q50 has received only minor updates, so choosing a used model is an excellent way to save money.

17. 2024 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe

2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe
2024 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe / Credit: BMW
  • Price: $38,400
  • What We Like: Cheapest BMW
  • What We Don’t: Not as luxurious as rivals or as high-performing as other BMWs

The 2 Series is available in two body styles: a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan called the Gran Coupe. The Gran Coupe is more affordable and spacious, but the coupe is more upscale and fun to drive.

The Gran Coupe offers space for five people. While its second row is more accommodating, it’s not spacious. BMW is known for making sporty cars, so it shouldn’t be surprising that the Gran Coupe is fun to drive, though not as fun as a 2 Series 2-door coupe. Its standard turbo-4 engine produces 228 horsepower.

Shopping for a Used 2 Series?

The 2 Series Gran Coupe sedan was introduced in 2020 as an all-new model and has seen few changes.

How We Ranked These Small Luxury Sedans

At Carfax, data and value drive our vehicle rankings. To choose the best small luxury sedans, we looked at passenger space, trunk space, performance, crash-test scores from IIHS and NHTSA, and each vehicle’s overall quality and value. Our rankings are based on the latest models, but since many of these vehicles have remained unchanged from earlier years, our insights also apply to used models.

*We cite the EPA’s combined mpg range for each vehicle, which takes into account the mpg for both city and highway driving.
