What Is a Plug-In Hybrid?

Basically, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is a mix of a hybrid and an electric car. The aim is to give you the best of both worlds. For short trips, you can drive around on battery power alone, and when you’re done, you can plug in and recharge. If you need to take a longer trip, you can use the gasoline engine.

Though plug-in hybrid cars aren’t entirely new, the Chevrolet Volt represented a big step forward when it debuted in 2011. The Volt is widely recognized as the first mainstream plug-in hybrid car. The Volt was put to rest in 2019, but was around long enough to help usher in a new wave of plug-in hybrids that run the spectrum from budget compact cars to luxo-barge SUVs.

The following lists will show you every plug-in hybrid on sale this year.

How We Ranked These Plug-In Hybrids

To determine the best plug-in hybrids, we considered fuel economy, electric-only range, and starting price. The resulting list shows you which plug-in hybrids offer the best combination of value, fuel economy, and ability to run on electric power alone.

The list of luxury plug-in hybrids provided above shows that not all luxury brands have gotten on board with PHEVs, but several of those that have are going all in, with PHEV technology available on at least a few models.

Though this helps PHEVs seem more mainstream – in many cases, the feature is presented simply as a trim – it also means that none of these models sell in particularly high volume.

Pricing is another consideration. For example, the BMW X3 with all-wheel drive starts at $43,950. The plug-in hybrid model starts at $48,550. That’s a premium of almost $5,000, though the plug-in hybrid X3 does have an additional 40 horsepower, as well as better fuel economy.

The Best Used Plug-In Hybrids

Although a few are all-new for 2020 or 2021, many of the vehicles on the list are relatively unchanged from previous model years. Shopping for a used version of the same vehicle make and model can often yield significant savings over new.

Every Carfax used car listing comes with a free Carfax Vehicle History Report. Not only will the report reveal damage that may otherwise go undetected, but it is a great way to explore the particular vehicle’s repair and maintenance history.
