Best Plug-In Hybrids in 2024

2023 Toyota Prius Prime

We Rank Every Plug-In Hybrid Available in 2024

A plug-in hybrid vehicle combines the best of both worlds: it can typically travel dozens of miles on electricity before switching to a gasoline engine. On short trips or commutes, you might not need gas at all. This saves you trips to the pump while boosting your green chops. Don’t forget that some of these models are eligible for a federal tax credit of up to $7,500 together with state or local incentives. We’ve ranked these from cheapest to most expensive.

Some vehicles on this list may be from a previous model year, but they are still available as new models. Sometimes automakers are slow to update specs and pricing. Other times they may be redesigning a model or have excess inventory.

How We Ranked These Plug-In Hybrids

1. 2024 Toyota Prius Prime

2023 Toyota Prius Prime

  • Price: $32,675 est.
  • Fuel Economy: 133 MPGe* est.
  • Battery-only Range: 38 miles est.
  • What We Like: Low price; Toyota reliability; top fuel economy
  • What We Don’t: Tight rear-seat headroom

The Prius Prime features a comfortable ride and class-leading fuel economy. It uses a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine and 2 electric motors to deliver 220 horsepower. The sedan rides smoothly, has room for 5 people, and has several advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS) and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto

Shopping for a Used Prius Prime?

The Prius Prime was completely redesigned for 2023. Models built between 2017 and 2022 feature similar styling. Toyota added technology and safety features to 2020 and 2021 models.

2. 2024 Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid

2023 Kia Niro

  • Price: $34,290
  • Fuel Economy: 108 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 33 miles
  • What We Like: Great price
  • What We Don’t: Not much

The Kia Niro is a fuel-conscious subcompact plug-in hybrid that also comes in traditional hybrid and full-electric variants. The plug-in hybrid model is one of the most efficient vehicles in the segment. It delivers 180 horsepower via a 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor. The SUV delivers a smooth ride at speed. The Niro’s 5-passenger cabin is surprisingly roomy for the subcompact SUV segment. It comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

The Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid was completely redesigned for 2023. The previous-generation Niro PHEV ran from 2018-2022.

3. 2024 Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid

  • Price: $38,475
  • Fuel Economy: 80 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 33 miles
  • What We Like: Spacious interior; 10-year powertrain warranty
  • What We Don’t: Frustrating dashboard buttons

The Hyundai Tucson sports a radical look outside and in. The dashboard controls are now touch-sensitive, which makes them harder to use than traditional knobs and buttons. However, Tucson has a large cargo area, and this plug-in hybrid trim can go up to 33 miles without gas. The Tucson PHEV also starts about $5,000 lower than the RAV4 Prime, and it comes with a 10-year/100,000 powertrain warranty.

Shopping for a Used Tucson?

Hyundai gave the Tucson a radical redesign for 2022 and debuted the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid the same year.

4. 2024 Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid

2024 Kia Sportage PHEV

  • Price: $39,490
  • Fuel Economy: 84 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 34 miles
  • What We Like: Low price; spacious; 10-year warranty
  • What We Don’t: Frustrating dashboard buttons

The Kia Sportage got a complete makeover for the 2023 model year, ushering in bold exterior styling, a dashboard with an expansive curved digital instrument display and touchscreen, plus new hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions that nicely balance power, efficiency, and price. The Sportage Plug-In Hybrid has plenty of space for passengers and cargo. Thanks to the Sportage Plug-In Hybrid’s standard 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, Kia counters the wild styling with mechanical peace of mind.

Shopping for a Used Sportage Hybrid?

The Sportage Plug-In Hybrid was all new for 2023 and is unchanged for 2024, so used models should look like the version shown above.

5. 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander
2024 Mitsubishi Outlander / Credit: Mitsubishi
  • Price: $40,345
  • Fuel Economy: 64 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 38 miles
  • What We Like: Low price for PHEV, 10-year warranty
  • What We Don’t: Below-average reliability

The Outlander PHEV takes the compact 3-row SUV and gives it a jolt in the form of two electric motors. This bumps the horsepower from 181 to 248, delivering a notable difference in acceleration. The 38-mile driving range isn’t bad for the Outlander’s starting price. The Outlander’s stylish exterior makes it look sportier than it is, but that style, combined with its 10-year powertrain warranty, makes the Outlander a compelling option.

Shopping for a Used Outlander?

Mitsubishi added the plug-in hybrid option to the Outlander in 2023, and it hasn’t changed for 2024.

6. 2024 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid

2023 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid
2024 Ford Escape / Credit: Ford
  • Price: $40,500
  • Fuel Economy: 105 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 37 miles
  • What We Like: Good price
  • What We Don’t: Rivals have nicer cabins

The Escape Plug-In Hybrid delivers a smooth ride and quick acceleration using a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a battery pack to make 210 horsepower. The SUV seats 5 people and comes with a Wi-Fi hotspot, satellite radio, and a 13-inch touchscreen. The Escape handles well and delivers a pleasant ride. Its interior isn’t as high-quality as many of its rivals. However, the Escape boasts strong crash test ratings and has a host of standard ADAS features.

Shopping for a Used Escape?

The Escape Plug-In Hybrid was refreshed in 2023, but the basic design has been the same since it launched in 2020.

7. 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T

2023 Dodge Hornet GT
2024 Dodge Hornet / Credit: Dodge
  • Price: $40,935
  • Fuel Economy: 77 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 33 miles
  • What We Like: Strong performance
  • What We Don’t: Pricey for its small size

The Dodge Hornet SUV will continue to create plenty of buzz for the 2024 model year. Based on the same platform used for the Alfa Romeo Tonale, the Hornet is a compact SUV with a sporty Italian spirit. Its optional plug-in hybrid powertrain produces 288-horsepower. Not only will it offer about 30 miles of electric-only driving range, but it also has a PowerShot feature that unleashes a short jolt of 25 extra horsepower when both paddle shifters are pulled.

Shopping for a Used Hornet?

The Hornet R/T is all-new for 2024, so few used options are available.

8. 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-In Hybrid

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe

  • Price: $42,110
  • Fuel Economy: 76 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 30 miles
  • What We Like: Great crash-test scores; nice interior
  • What We Don’t: Not much

The Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-In Hybrid has a long list of appealing niceties, including a responsive 10-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Santa Fe also has strong crash-test performance and a host of ADAS features. There’s little not to like about this midsize Hyundai crossover.

The Santa Fe Plug-In Hybrid has 261 horsepower and standard AWD. Non-hybrid Santa Fe SUVs are a bargain and get up to 26 mpg, which is still great for a midsize SUV.

Shopping for a Used Santa Fe Hybrid?

The entire Santa Fe lineup was last redesigned in 2019, and many used models are available. However, the Santa Fe Plug-In Hybrid only dates back to 2021, and 2023 marks its final model year.

9. 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale

2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale
2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale / Credit: Alfa Romeo
  • Price: $42,995
  • Fuel Economy: 77 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 30 miles
  • What We Like: Stylish exterior and interior, punchy hybrid powertrain, 30-mile all-electric range
  • What We Don’t: Handling could be more precise

Drivers looking for something livelier, greener, and a bit offbeat in the small crossover SUV segment should consider the new-for-2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale, a subcompact, luxury plug-in hybrid SUV that seats five people. It’s distinctively styled, with Alfa’s shield-shaped grille flanked up front by narrow, horizontal compound LED headlights. The 285-horsepower 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, and gas/electric hybrid powertrain deliver sufficient pep. As a plug-in hybrid, the Tonale can travel up to 30 miles solely on battery power, after which it operates as a conventional hybrid with the electric motor augmenting the gas engine. Selectable driving modes, a 6-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive (AWD), and several driver-assist features are standard.

The Tonale rides and handles well, but it’s not as engaging as its larger sibling, the Stelvio. The interior, however, is nicely executed and comes with ambient lighting. What’s more, the Tonale is the first production vehicle to come with an NFT (non-fungible token) digital certificate to certify authenticity and ownership.

Shopping for a Used Tonale?

This is the first model year for the Tonale, so there are no older models to be found. A used Alfa Romeo Stelvio might suffice as an alternative, provided it checks out mechanically and passes a title search.

10. 2024 Toyota RAV4 Prime

2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime / Photo Credit: Toyota
2024 Toyota RAV4 Prime / Photo Credit: Toyota
  • Price: $43,440
  • Fuel Economy: 94 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 42 miles
  • What We Like: Good battery range; RAV4 dependability
  • What We Don’t: Pricey for a RAV4

The RAV4 Prime is a roomy and comfortable plug-in hybrid SUV. It uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine to produce 302 horsepower. All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard. The RAV4 Prime seats 5 people and features a Wi-Fi hotspot, satellite radio, and an 8-inch touchscreen. Toyota has also equipped the SUV with a long list of standard ADAS features.

Shopping for a Used RAV4?

Toyota released the RAV4 Prime in 2021, and its basic design hasn’t changed much.

11. 2024 BMW 330e

2024 BMW 3 Series Sedan 330i
2024 BMW 330e / Credit: BMW
  • Price: $45,600
  • Fuel Economy: 68-73 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 22 miles
  • What We Like: Strong engines, engaging handling, roomy cabin
  • What We Don’t: Rivals have more opulent cabins, infotainment system has a learning curve

The 2023 BMW 330e is the hybrid version of the popular 3 Series compact sports sedan. Its plug-in hybrid powertrain makes 288 horsepower and can go up to 22 miles on electricity alone. An 8-speed automatic transmission is standard. Buyers can choose between rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD).

The engine delivers strong acceleration, matched with lively handling. Yet the 3 Series also provides valuable utility. Its cabin is roomy enough to fit adults comfortably in both rows, and this car has one of the biggest trunks in its class. There are a couple of shortcomings to consider: This car’s infotainment system has a steep learning curve, and competitors have more opulent cabins.

Shopping for a Used 330e?

While the 3 Series has been around for many generations, the 330e debuted in 2016. That still gives buyers on the used market a number of years to choose from, and buying used could save you money. The 330e was last redesigned in 2021.

12. 2024 Mazda CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid

2024 Mazda CX-90
2024 Mazda CX-90 / Credit: Mazda
  • Price: $49,945
  • Fuel Economy: 56 MPGe*
  • Battery Range: 26 miles
  • What We Like: Enjoyable handling, standard AWD, upmarket cabin
  • What We Don’t: Less cargo room than rivals, small third-row

The three-row CX-90 impresses with its upmarket cabin. The interior is stylish, with high-quality materials and a handsome design. This SUV also treats drivers to engaging handling, with an ideal balance of comfort and sportiness. It’s an excellent partner in many driving situations.

Mazda sells this SUV with a choice of three powertrains, but only one is a plug-in hybrid: a 4-cylinder plug-in hybrid that makes 323 horsepower. All models have an 8-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels.

There are some deficits to consider: Cargo space is below average for the class, and the CX-90 has a tight third row that isn’t comfortable for taller passengers.

Shopping for a Used CX-90?

The CX-90 is new for 2024, so few older versions of this SUV are available. It replaced the CX-9. Used CX-9 models are easier to find on the used market, but they won’t be PHEVs.

13. 2024 Kia Sorento Plug-In Hybrid

2021 Kia Sorento / Photo Credit: Kia
2024 Kia Sorento / Photo Credit: Kia
  • Price: $49,990
  • Fuel Economy: 79 MPGe*
  • Battery Range: 32 miles
  • What We Like: Most fuel-efficient 3-row SUV
  • What We Don’t: 4-star NHTSA crash test score; expensive

The Sorento has a handsome interior with high-quality materials. Space in the first two rows is generous, though the third row is small. The Sorento features an outstanding infotainment system and a wealth of ADAS features, but its NHTSA crash-test ratings aren’t as impressive as rivals. This Kia SUV’s plug-in hybrid powertrain makes 261 horsepower while getting up to 79 MPGe. Don’t want to spring for the expensive plug-in hybrid? Not to worry: All Sorento models are fuel-efficient, getting anywhere from 24 to 37 mpg.

Shopping for a Used Sorento?

Kia entirely redesigned the Sorento lineup for the 2021 model year. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid models did not exist before 2021, so used options are limited.

14. 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe

2024 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon X 4xe
2024 Jeep Wrangler / Credit: Jeep
  • Price: $49,995
  • Fuel Economy: 49 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 21 miles
  • What We Like: Iconic off-roader, convertible top, endless opportunities for customization, fun, reliable
  • What We Don’t: Impractical, so-so crash-test scores, not as comfortable as rivals, expensive

The Wrangler is an icon thanks to its incredible off-road prowess, convertible top, and seemingly limitless customization options. It’s a blast to drive and ride in, but if you’re looking for something comfortable and refined, it’s not for you. The Wrangler isn’t as practical as other midsize 2-row SUVs, and its rough ride and crash-test ratings are mediocre.

The plug-in hybrid Wrangler 4xe adds a 375-horsepower gas-electric setup to the mix. It doesn’t have great electric range compared with other plug-in hybrids, but it does significantly improve the base Wrangler’s dismal fuel economy while delivering strong acceleration. It is pricey, though.

Shopping for a Used Wrangler?

Jeep added the 4xe PHEV to the lineup partway through the 2021 model year. For 2024, Jeep updated the Wrangler’s grille and infotainment system.

15. 2024 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
2024 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid / Credit: Stellantis
  • Price: $51,095
  • Fuel Economy: 82 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 32 miles
  • What We Like: Tons of features; it is the only plug-in hybrid minivan; 140.5 cu ft of cargo space
  • What We Don’t: Expensive; not available with many of the Pacifica’s best features, such as Stow ‘n Go or AWD

The Chrysler Pacifica tops our overall ranking of minivans. So why do we list it again here? It comes down to cost. The Pacifica Hybrid has a starting price of $51,000, compared to the $37,000 starting price of the Toyota Sienna. While it’s true that the Pacifica boasts an innovative plug-in hybrid system that lets it go up to 32 miles on electricity alone, the added cost is substantial enough that the Sienna is the better hybrid minivan for most people.

The Pacifica plug-in hybrid minivan features a V6 engine and two electric motors producing a total of 260 horsepower — 15 more than the Sienna. The Pacifica Hybrid accelerates quickly and is powerful enough for most driving situations.

There’s plenty of room for groceries and luggage in the Pacifica, with 32.3 cubic feet of space behind the third row. The third-row Stow ‘n Go seats fold flat into the floor to make a total of 87.5 cubic feet behind the second-row captain’s chairs. With both rows of seats folded, the Pacific Hybrid has a generous maximum cargo capacity of 140.5 cubic feet. That’s 40 cubic feet more than the Sienna offers.

The minivan seats seven and boasts leather upholstery, heated front seats, and power-sliding rear doors. All models come with wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, satellite radio, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen. Standard ADAS features include rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring.

Shopping for a Used Pacifica?

Chrysler introduced the Pacifica Hybrid minivan in 2017. You’ll find similar features and styling in models from 2017 to the present, though the 2021 Pacifica Hybrid received slightly updated styling, more standard ADAS features, and an upgraded infotainment system.

16. 2024 Volvo S60 Recharge

2023 Volvo S60 Recharge T8
2024 Volvo S60 / Credit: Volvo
  • Price: $51,950
  • Fuel Economy: 74 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 22 miles
  • What We Like: Top crash-test scores; handsome styling; strong powertrain
  • What We Don’t: Plug-in hybrid is an expensive upgrade

This Volvo small sedan features eye-catching styling, a spacious and modern interior, and a host of standard technology and ADAS features. Unlike most competitors in the small luxury segment, the S60 does not attempt to be sporty – it’s all about comfort. The S60’s plug-in hybrid powertrain makes up to 455 horsepower and comes with AWD. The wagon version of the S60, the Volvo V60, is also available as a plug-in hybrid.

Shopping for a Used S60?

The current generation of the Volvo S60 debuted in the 2019 model year. Volvo gave the S60 a slight refresh in 2023, but models from 2019-2022 will have the same basic design as the 2024 model.

17. 2024 Lincoln Corsair Hybrid

2023 Lincoln Corsair
2024 Lincoln Corsair / Credit: Lincoln
  • Price: $53,925
  • Fuel Economy: 78 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 28 miles
  • What We Like: Unique interior design; comfortable
  • What We Don’t: Rivals are more fun to drive

The Corsair may not be as agile or fun to drive as its rivals, but it delivers a coddling ride. It has respectable passenger and cargo space, is quiet and stylish, and is teeming with standard niceties, including a full suite of ADAS features. This Lincoln crossover features a capable PHEV configuration that makes 266 horsepower and can go up to 28 miles on electricity alone before switching to gas.

Shopping for a Used Corsair Hybrid?

The hybrid Corsair Grand Touring first came to market for the 2021 model year, and it received a light styling update in 2023.

18. 2024 Audi Q5 Hybrid

2024 Audi Q5 PHEV
2024 Audi Q5 PHEV / Credit: Audi
  • Price: $57,800
  • Fuel Economy: 60 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 28 miles
  • What We Like: Powerful, excellent crash-test scores
  • What We Don’t: The hybrid engine is pricey

The hybrid version of Audi’s small SUV is called the Q5 55 TFSI e quattro S tronic. It’s a bit of a mouthful, but the combination of a four-cylinder turbocharged gas engine and an electric motor produces a healthy 362 horsepower. With electricity alone, the plug-in hybrid Q5 can go 23 miles and up to 84 mph.

The Audi Q5 is one of the more well-rounded compact luxury SUVs on the market. It’s safe, comfortable, and delivers a welcome balance of luxury and practicality, though it doesn’t offer as much cargo space as its rivals. Every Q5 is loaded with the latest technology and ADAS features.

Shopping for a Used Q5?

Q5 models from 2018 onward have similar styling to the 2024 model, though 2021 welcomed a modest exterior refresh. If you’re in the market for the PHEV model, note that it has a battery pack upgrade for 2022, so older models won’t have as much electric range.

19. 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge

2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge
2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge / Credit: Volvo
  • Price: $57,900
  • Fuel Economy: 63 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 35 miles
  • What We Like: Great crash-test scores, powerful, spacious
  • What We Don’t: Expensive

The XC60 Recharge (also called the XC60 T8) is the plug-in hybrid version of Volvo’s popular compact SUV. As the range-topping model, it generates a whopping 455 horsepower from a turbocharged four-cylinder and two electric motors. Its battery is good for 35 miles of driving on electric power alone.

The Volvo XC60 features two roomy rows of seats, one of the largest cargo holds in the class, and competitive fuel economy estimates. It’s also easy on the eyes and has a modern, premium interior. This Volvo compact luxury SUV has strong crash-test ratings and comes equipped with a wealth of advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS).

Shopping for a Used XC60?

The plug-in hybrid XC60 has been available since 2018, though it only started going by the “Recharge” name in 2021. Before that, it was referred to as the XC60 T8. Models from 2018 to the present have similar styling, but 2022 saw a big horsepower increase and better battery capacity.

20. 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee / Photo Credit: Stellantis
  • Price: $59,865
  • Fuel Economy: 56 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 25 miles
  • What We Like: Comfortable on- and off-road; nice interior
  • What We Don’t: High price

The Grand Cherokee is unique since it’s both an off-road champ and a comfortable family hauler. However, it’s expensive. It doesn’t exactly sip fuel in its standard trims, but as part of its 2022 redesign, Jeep added a PHEV to the lineup, the 4xe.

While the Grand Cherokee isn’t as cargo-friendly as competing models, it has a nice interior, a first-rate infotainment system, and comfortable seats.

Shopping for a Used Grand Cherokee?

Jeep redesigned the Grand Cherokee for the 2022 model year and added the 4xe.

21. 2024 Lexus NX 450h+

  • Price: $59,905
  • Fuel Economy: 84 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 37 miles
  • What We Like: Top luxury hybrid mpg
  • What We Don’t: Very expensive

The NX combines a history of top-notch safety and reliability ratings with excellent fuel economy estimates. It’s available as a traditional gas-powered SUV, a hybrid, and a PHEV. It’s equipped with a multitude of safety and convenience features. This Lexus compact crossover isn’t notably sporty or powerful, but it’s quiet, smooth, and peppy enough for daily driving. The NX features an upscale cabin that comfortably seats 5 passengers, though cargo space is limited.

Shopping for a Used NX?

Lexus completely redesigned the NX model lineup for 2022 and introduced the plug-in hybrid NX 450h+ as a new trim.

22. 2024 Volvo S90 Recharge

2024 Volvo S90 / Photo Credit: Volvo
  • Price: $65,650
  • Fuel Economy: 66 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 38 miles
  • What We Like: Handsome styling; large back seat
  • What We Don’t: Pricey

For decades, Volvo was associated with safety over style, but since the turn of the century, the Swedish automaker has gotten more looks with clean, modern designs. The S90 is Volvo’s flagship luxury sedan. Its muscular, squared-off exterior styling gives way to a world-class cabin. The Recharge makes 400 horsepower and can travel up to 38 miles on electric power. The S90 Recharge plug-in hybrid is now available in the lower Plus trim for 2024.

Volvo’s Google-based infotainment system can be complicated. This system and the previous one suffered from the same dependence on the touchscreen to house too many vehicle systems.

Don’t let the style and performance fool you. Volvo is still committed to safety, as evidenced by the S90’s crash-test ratings.

Shopping for a Used S90?

The Volvo S90 Recharge was introduced for the 2018 model year. Aside from a few subtle updates, it hasn’t changed much since.

23. 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e

  • Price: $69,500
  • Fuel Economy: TBD*
  • Battery-only Range: TBD
  • What We Like: Great crash-test scores, satisfying mix of performance and luxury
  • What We Don’t: Pricey

The hybrid version of Mercedes’ midsize three-row SUV packs 381 horsepower thanks to a combination of a turbocharged four-cylinder and an electric motor. It can operate on electric power alone for the length of an average commute. If you need more range, the gas engine kicks in to get you the rest of the way to your destination.

The GLE delivers an unmatched balance of comfort, performance, technology, and luxury. The GLE also has top-notch crash-test ratings. It’s more expensive than classmates, though, and this is a pricey class to begin with.

Shopping for a Used GLE?

The GLE 450e is all-new for 2024, so there will only be a few used models on the market.

24. 2024 Lexus RX Plug-In Hybrid

2024 Lexus RX_450h
2024 Lexus RX 450h+ / Credit: Lexus
  • Price: $70,080
  • Fuel Economy: 83 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 37 miles
  • What We Like: Good range and fuel economy
  • What We Don’t: Huge price, short on power

The Lexus RX Plug-In Hybrid takes the classic RX midsize SUV and adds a sophisticated powertrain with a four-cylinder engine and three electric motors. The upside is great fuel economy. The downsides are a huge price tag and less power than the competition. The Mercedes GLE, for example, costs a little less and has about 30% more power, while still providing the benefits of electric-only driving with a gas engine backup.

Luckily, the new RX comes standard with many comfort and ADAS features. The cabin benefits from a 14.0-inch screen and the plush comfort for which Lexus is known.

Shopping for a Used RX Plug-In Hybrid?

The Lexus RX Plug-In Hybrid is all-new for 2024, so there will only be a few used models on the market.

25. 2024 Volvo V60 Recharge

2024 Volvo V60 / Credit: Volvo
  • Price: $71,250
  • Fuel Economy: 74 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 41 miles
  • What We Like: Top crash-test scores; handsome styling; strong powertrain
  • What We Don’t: Plug-in hybrid is an expensive upgrade

Volvo has a long history with the wagon body style, and the Swedish automaker offers two V60 wagons based on the S60 sedan. The plug-in hybrid version is a 455-horsepower model called the V60 Recharge.

The V60 has an impressive interior that makes the wagon feel like a true luxury vehicle. The minimalist approach to buttons and dials gives the cabin an understated design. The wagon has an impressive standard list of ADAS features, which includes BSW, traffic sign recognition, rear cross-traffic alert, and pedestrian detection.

Shopping for a Used V60?

The Volvo V60 Recharge has been around since 2020, and the design hasn’t changed much.

26. 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge

2021 Volvo Cars XC90 Recharge
2024 Volvo XC90 / Credit: Volvo
  • Price: $71,900
  • Fuel Economy: 58 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 32 miles
  • What We Like: 85.7 cu ft cargo area is largest in class; top crash-test scores; good mpg
  • What We Don’t: Not much

The Volvo XC90 earns a slot among the greats in the luxury midsize SUV class by combining practical elements, such as a large interior and competitive price, with style inside and out. While the XC90 can require more time at the service shop than some competitors, its cutting-edge technology keeps it a step ahead.

In addition to a wide range of standard ADAS features, the XC90 has a lineup of turbocharged and electrified engines that help it get excellent fuel economy while delivering up to 400 horsepower.

Shopping for a Used XC90?

The XC90’s last full redesign dates back to 2016, though it saw an exterior refresh for 2020. Features have changed over the years, but the styling and engines have remained the same. That means any used XC90 from 2016 on will be similar to the model shown above.

27. 2024 BMW X5 xDrive45e

  • Price: $72,500
  • Fuel Economy: 50 MPGe*
  • Battery-only Range: 30 miles
  • What We Like: Only costs a little more than the base X5
  • What We Don’t: So-so MPGe

The X5 is an excellent SUV. It’s comfortable, quiet, and agile. Standard seating accommodates five passengers, and the cargo capacity is impressive. The X5 xDrive45e’s standard 389-horsepower powertrain includes a turbocharged 6-cylinder engine and a 111-horsepower electric motor that provide strong acceleration, although fuel economy in this large SUV is not exactly Prius-grade. All-wheel drive is standard.

Shopping for a Used X5?

The plug-in hybrid xDrive45e trim joined the BMW X5 lineup in 2021 and hasn’t changed much since, aside from a mild refresh in 2024.

28. 2024 Lexus TX 550h+

  • Price: $78,050
  • Fuel Economy: TBD
  • Battery-only Range: 33 miles
  • What We Like: Lots of space and power
  • What We Don’t: Expensive

The TX is the Lexus version of the Toyota Grand Highlander. It’s a 3-row midsize SUV with spacious seats, tons of cargo space, and three powerful engine options, including the plug-in hybrid TX. The TX 550h+ melds a V6 to electric motors to make 404 horsepower.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain gives the TX decent fuel economy for such a large and powerful SUV, but the price premium probably isn’t worth it. Other brands don’t charge this much to upgrade to a plug-in hybrid. In fact, the TX 550h+ is the second-most expensive plug-in hybrid SUV on the market.

Shopping for a Used TX?

The Lexus TX is all-new for 2024, but there are already a few used models on the market. Before the TX, the Lexus RX-L filled the midsize three-row SUV slot. The RX-L was available with a hybrid powertrain, but not a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

29. 2024 Porsche Cayenne e-Hybrid

  • Price: $93,350
  • Fuel Economy: TBD*
  • Battery-only Range: TBD
  • What We Like: Stellar acceleration and handling; endlessly customizable
  • What We Don’t: High base price; $200K fully loaded; Coupe model is smaller and more expensive

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a midsize luxury SUV that handles better than the Cayenne, and it offers several muscular engine options as well. However, it’s not cheap, especially when you load it up and customize it, and it’s not the best cargo hauler either. Moreover, coupe models are less practical and even more expensive.

This Porsche high-performance people-hauler starts out with a 463-horsepower V6/electric motor combo, but you can upgrade to a 729-horsepower plug-in hybrid monster called the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. That power will cost you, though. The Turbo starts in the mid-$100K range and goes up quickly from there.

Shopping for a Used Cayenne?

2019-2024 Cayenne models come from the same generation and have similar styling and features. New trims and features arrived in 2021 and 2022, and a refresh hit in 2024. That said, a used model should be similar enough to the current model for most shoppers, and it will cost less.

FAQs

What is a plug-in hybrid?

A plug-in hybrid combines a traditional hybrid and an electric car. Like a traditional hybrid, a plug-in hybrid uses a gasoline engine, electric motors, and a battery to improve fuel economy. Like an electric car, a plug-in hybrid can be charged with a plug.

Best Used Plug-In Hybrids

Plug-in hybrids tend to be pricier than their gas-only counterparts, but buying a used one can save you thousands of dollars while providing you with many of the same features you’d find in a new model.

How We Ranked the Best Plug-In Hybrids

At Carfax, data and value drive our rankings. We ranked these plug-in hybrids based on their starting price. We also included the biggest pros and cons of each vehicle.

*The EPA uses a mixture of highway and city driving for its combined estimate. The EPA uses “miles per gallon equivalent” or MPGe to measure fuel efficiency in EVs. For an EV, 33.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity is the equivalent of one gallon of gasoline. Since electric motors are more efficient, the MPGe rate will be much higher than the MPG you see for a gasoline engine.
