About Volvo
Swedish automaker Volvo has been a pioneer for vehicle safety since its inception. The automaker is credited with inventing the three-point safety belt, the rearward-facing child seat, the world’s first integrated booster cushion, side impact airbags, blind spot monitoring, pedestrian detection with automatic emergency braking, and more.
At the beginning of the new millennium, Volvo’s lineup was dominated by sedans, small cars, and wagons. The automaker had vehicles such as the C70 convertible, S40 subcompact car, S60 compact car, S80 large car, V40 subcompact wagon, and V70 midsize wagon on sale. Volvo continued to expand its lineup of wagons with new additions such as the V50 and XC70, and introduced its first SUV with the XC90 in 2003. The compact XC60 SUV followed in 2010.
Most of Volvo’s early vehicles are no longer available, as the automaker has worked hard on reinventing itself under its new Chinese ownership. Its lineup of wagons was reduced to just two options with the V60 and V90 by 2017. The S60 compact sedan is still around, but its recent redesign in 2019 makes it look just as upscale as the large S90 that came out in 2017. The subcompact XC40, meanwhile, joined the XC60 and XC90 in 2019, while a coupe-inspired SUV arrived in 2022 with the C40.
In 2015, launched the XC90 hybrid, which was its first electrified vehicle. Since then, all of Volvo’s vehicles, except for the V90 Cross Country and V60 Cross Country, have become available with hybrid powertrains. The automaker has also introduced electric cars such as the XC40 and C40, and has plans to introduce the long-range and affordable EX90 subcompact electric SUV in the near future. Volvo also has plans to become an all-electric brand by 2030.
