With fuel-efficient turbo and supercharged engines that find a near-perfect balance of performance and economy, the Volvo XC60 is a comfortable, compact luxury crossover from a brand known for safety and convenience.
Volvo XC60 Overview
The Volvo XC60 is a compact luxury SUV that launched for the 2010 model year with a significant refresh for 2014. This model offers an attractive blend of traditional Volvo styling and contemporary design. A true luxury vehicle, the XC60’s top-grade materials, cutting-edge technology and excellent fit and finish help this crossover stand apart in an ever-growing segment.
The XC60 was launched in 2010 with a normally aspirated 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine good for 235 horsepower. A turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six good for 281 horsepower was also available, and both were mated with a six-speed automatic transmission. For 2011, these engines saw horsepower increases, with output rising to 240 and 300 horsepower, respectively. In addition to these engine choices, a more powerful version of the 3.0-liter engine offering 325 horsepower was available beginning in 2012. The 3.2 liter was phased out in 2015. The 3.0 liter engine was phased out in the following model year, and is available in early-build 2016 models.
For 2015, three new engine choices were offered. The base front-wheel drive XC60 is motivated by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder that produces 240 horsepower, while the base all-wheel drive model features a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine with 250 horsepower. The XC60 is also available with a supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder that generates 302 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on all but the five-cylinder model, which comes with a six-speed automatic.
The well-equipped base model includes cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity and a power driver seat with memory functions. Base models also come with an audio system that includes USB connectivity and satellite radio.
Upper trim levels add features such as leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, privacy glass and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Active safety technologies such as a driver alertness system and a lane-departure warning system are available.
The Volvo XC90 is a strong contender in the compact two-row luxury crossover segment, competing with long-time favorites such as the luxurious Lexus RX, the sporty BMW X3 and the plush Audi Q5. The segment also includes the Lincoln MKC, Land Rover Discovery Sport and Acura RDX.
