About Tesla
Founded in 2003, Tesla has had a meteoric rise from being a small startup with a single vehicle on sale to being the most popular all-electric brand in the world. While Tesla started small, it quickly expanded its lineup to have an option in four major segments and has ambitious goals for future EVs.
Tesla started with the Roadster in 2008 that utilized a chassis from Lotus and had 220 miles of range, though that figure was increased to 245 miles in 2010. The large Model S sedan was introduced in 2012 and was joined by the Model X SUV in 2016. The Model 3, which is a compact sedan, was introduced in 2017 and was used as the basis for the compact Model Y SUV in 2020.
While Tesla’s current lineup is dated, its EVs have some of the most range of any EVs on sale. All of its models offer more than 300 miles of range with the Model S having an EPA-rated 405 miles of range when properly equipped. In addition to increasing range, Tesla has also focused on improving performance with the tri-motor Plaid models for the Model S and Model X. The Model S Plaid has 1,020 horsepower and can get to 60 mph in just 1.99 seconds.
Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has promised new EVs from the brand including the funky-looking Cybertruck pickup and a new Roadster with supercar performance and looks. It now sells an electric semi truck, as well, that outperforms its diesel competition in most areas. Tesla is also known for its advanced Autopilot system, yoke-style steering wheel, button-less interiors, enormous central touchscreens that can act as televisions or gaming pads, and its Full Self-Driving Capability package, which Musk promises will make the vehicles fully autonomous at some point.
