The Scion iA is the first sedan that’s been offered by Toyota’s sub-brand. This subcompact car promises sleek styling, great fuel economy and fun driving dynamics.
Introduced for the 2016 model year, the Scion iA shares the same platform as the Mazda2, which last sold in the U.S. as a 2014 model. The iA is the first sedan to bear the Scion name, and the automaker aims to steal some of the subcompact market share by offering nimble handling, a strong list of standard equipment and a high-quality interior.
The iA comes standard with front-wheel drive and a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 106 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed automatic is optional. The EPA reports that the base iA gets 31/41 mpg city/highway. Models with the automatic transmission get slightly better estimates of 33/42 mpg.
The Scion iA seats five and has roughly 13 cubic feet of trunk space. Standard features include push-button start, Bluetooth and USB connectivity and a Display audio system with a 7-inch touch screen. Smartphone app integration is also standard, providing access to services like Aha, Stitcher and Pandora Internet Radio.
Safety features include a standard rearview camera, as well as a suite of airbags, anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control. A low-speed pre-collision system is also standard, which is an unusual feature in the subcompact class.
