About Pontiac
Fans of high-powered muscle cars surely fell in love with Pontiac’s early vehicles. While the American automaker was known for its muscle cars and lengthy cruisers back in the 1960s and ‘70s, Pontiac changed its tune in the 2000s, as it looked to rekindle some of the magic from its early vehicles with distinctive styling and an emphasis on performance.
In the first part of the 2000s, Pontiac entered the new millennium by continuing to offer older nameplates such as the Sunfire subcompact car, Montana SUV, Grand Prix family car, Grand Am compact car, Firebird muscle car, and Bonneville large car. The introduction of the odd-duck Aztek in 2001 was the first sign of Pontiac attempting to change its image.
Other vehicles followed suit with a similar pursuit, as Pontiac looked to replace rapidly aging models with new vehicles. The automaker slowly started to introduce new vehicles such as the Vibe, Torrent, G6, G5, and G3. Pontiac also attempted to return to its performance roots with sporty cars such as the Solstice convertible, GTO coupe, and G8 rear-wheel-drive car.
Unfortunately, Pontiac’s rebirth came a little too late. General Motors decided to kill off Pontiac to keep Buick around after the Great Recession in 2008. By the end of 2009, Pontiac had built its last batch of vehicles, bringing its 83-year history to an end.
