Pontiac G6 Reviews
The Pontiac G6 is a midsize car that’s available in sedan, coupe and convertible body styles. Introduced for 2005 as the successor to the Pontiac Grand Am, the G6 was produced through 2010, then canceled as General Motors shut down the Pontiac brand.
Pontiac G6 Overview
Upon its introduction, the 2005 Pontiac G6 was offered as a five-passenger sedan only. The initial model was available in two trims (base and GT) and powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. General Motors models that are similar to the G6 include the Chevrolet Malibu, Saab 9-3 and the Saturn Aura.
Standard equipment includes keyless entry, power accessories, air conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, cruise control, a CD player and a 60/40-split folding rear seat. The GT model has power-adjustable pedals, alloy wheels, a rear spoiler and a sport suspension. Satellite radio, two sunroof choices and chrome alloy wheels were optional.
Beginning with the 2006 model, the G6 line was expanded to include coupe and retractable-hardtop convertible body styles. A GTP trim level was introduced as well as two additional engine choices. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine became standard and is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. A 3.9-liter V6 was added, powering the all-new GTP trim. The V6 is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox or to a four-speed automatic transmission.
For 2007, the Pontiac G6 gained a fourth engine, a 3.6-liter V6 that’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Other changes included engine shuffling based on trim level choice, an update to the GT’s power steering, the expanded availability of side curtain airbags and the introduction of convenience and sport packages.
The G6 benefited from useful safety upgrades for 2008, with antilock brakes and side airbags becoming standard across the model line. Also, the previous GTP trim was renamed the GXP. A special Street Edition trim was available in limited quantities and featured an aggressive front fascia, a large rear wing and unique bucket seats.
For 2009, the six-speed automatic transmission became available as an option with the base four-cylinder engine. Satellite radio was made standard across all trims. The power-adjustable pedals that were previously standard with the GXP trim were dropped. Later in the model year, Pontiac made mid-year changes, adding Bluetooth, an updated dashboard and refreshed front and rear fascias.
The 2010 Pontiac G6 sedan was a carry-over from 2009, while the coupe and convertible models were discontinued. The sedan was built for fleet customers only, and only the four-cylinder engine was available.
