About Mitsubishi
One of the lesser known Japanese automakers, Mitsubishi has struggled to catch on and be competitive in the U.S. Once known for its incredible rally vehicles and sports cars, the automaker’s current lineup is small and focused on value-packed offerings that have bold styling.
Mitsubishi had one of the more well-stocked lineups in the early 2000s. The brand sold cars such as the Mirage, Diamante, Galant, Eclipse, and Lancer, as well as SUVs such as the Outlander, Montero Sport, and Montero. The Lancer Evolution, which was Mitsubishi’s sportiest and arguably its most well-known vehicle, was introduced in 2003. In 2004, Mitsubishi launched the midsize Endeavor SUV, while the Raider, a midsize pickup truck that was based on the Dodge Dakota, came out in 2006.
The sporty Lancer, Lancer Evolution, and Eclipse were discontinued by 2017, while most of the automaker’s SUVs got the axe back in 2011. Over the years, Mitsubishi’s lineup shrank as it looked to create a solid core of products. In modern times, Mitsubishi has only had five models on sale with the Mirage, Mirage G4, Eclipse Cross, Outlander Sport, and Outlander.
Despite being a small brand, Mitsubishi was one of the first to sell an affordable electric car in the U.S. with the i-MiEV in 2012. At the moment, Mitsubishi only has one electrified vehicle on sale, the Outlander PHEV, which came out in 2018.
