About Mazda
Unlike other Japanese automakers, Mazda focuses on vehicles that are enjoyable to drive, stylish, and upscale. Recently, Mazda has moved upstream to compete against other brands such as Acura and Buick with more premium models and features. The most iconic car in Mazda’s lineup is the sporty Miata, which is a legendary sports car that’s affordable and engaging to drive.
Mazdas from the early 2000s shared a lot of components with Ford vehicles but have been dropped as the automaker has attempted to move away from its former corporate partner and create more unique cars. Early vehicles in Mazda’s lineup include the Protege, 626, Millenia, B-Series pickup truck, MPV minivan, and Tribute SUV. The few vehicles that were around in the early 2000s that made it to modern times include the Miata and Mazda6.
By 2004, Mazda set out to introduce new models and focus on performance with new vehicles such as the Mazda3, RX-8, Mazda5 minivan, and high-performance MAZDASPEED MX-5 Miata. Shortly after the MAZDASPEED MX-5 Miata, Mazda debuted other sporty models under the same name with the MAZDASPEED6 and MAZDASPEED3. The CX-7 SUV, subcompact Mazda2 hatchback, and compact CX-5 SUV increased Mazda’s reach.
Mazda’s modern lineup has some old nameplates, such as the Mazda3, Miata, and CX-5, but also many new vehicles, such as the CX-3, CX-30, CX-50, and CX-90. The “CX” moniker in Mazda’s vehicles represents SUVs, which has become the automaker’s focal point recently.
The MX-30 was Mazda’s first electric vehicle, but had a short life, only being available for 2022 and 2023. Instead of EVs, Mazda has plans to focus on hybrids and plug-in hybrids like the CX-90 PHEV.
