Introduced for the 2015 model year, the Lincoln MKC stands out with a unique design and two powerful engine choices.
Lincoln is attempting to get back on the radar of luxury buyers after a listless existence for several years. It faces an uphill challenge because conquesting sales from the top dogs such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, means being “as good as” isn’t good enough. Rather, Lincoln’s products need to be better than what its competitors offer.
It may be the right vehicle in the right segment in the right time. Compact luxury SUVs are hot sellers and the MKC is among the best in the segment. It boasts a distinctive design that sets it apart from its competition and a slew of technological enhancements that keeps the MKC at the forefront of the group.
There are two power plant choices. First, a standard turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine outputs 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. It’s a fine engine and gives the SUV plenty of get-up-and-go. However, the more impressive of the two is the all-new turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine producing 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. In addition, the MKC utilizes active grille shutters, which close off the openings in the front grille at highway speeds to improve fuel economy.
The shutters are just one example of how the MKC uses technology to separate itself from the competition. MKC’s intelligent all-wheel drive system also includes continuously controlled damping. Drivers can use Lincoln Drive Control to select from sport, comfort and normal drive modes.
MKC also offers brake support, a lane-keeping System, blind spot monitoring and driver assist to help drivers avoid accidents.
The MKC starts off a bit more expensive than some vehicles in the segment, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA or the BMW X1, but once comparably equipped, it is typically less expensive, which is the formula Lincoln needs to follow to gain new customers.
