About Fiat
Despite being one of the oldest names in automobile history, Fiat’s story in the U.S. has been difficult. The Italian marque stopped selling vehicles in the U.S. in the ‘80s, but returned to the market in 2011 by focusing on subcompact cars. Today Fiat is a part of Stellantis’ lineup of brands.
Fiat’s return to the U.S. market began with the subcompact 500, which spawned convertible and sporty Abarth versions over its lifespan and became the basis for the majority of the brand’s lineup. In 2014, Fiat introduced the 500L, a slightly larger version of the 500 that was funny-looking but eminently practical. The lineup grew again in 2016 with the new 500X subcompact SUV. Fiat then partnered with Mazda to create the 124 Spider sports car in 2017 that was built on the same assembly line as the Miata. Currently, however, Fiat only sells the 500X in the U.S.
Fiat was one of the few automakers to sell an all-electric city car in the U.S, with the 2013 500e. The electric vehicle was discontinued in 2019, along with most of the Fiat lineup. Fiat, however, has plans to revive the 500 for the 2024 model year, though it will only be available as the all-electric 500e.
