The Buick LeSabre is a full-size car that was last produced for the 2005 model year. First sold as a 1959 model, the LeSabre held a consistent spot in Buick’s model lineup for 46 years.
The LeSabre went through seven redesigns. First-generation (1959-60) and second-generation (1961-64) models were offered in coupe, convertible, wagon and sedan body styles. The wagon model was dropped when the third-generation LeSabre was introduced for 1965 and the fourth-generation model was introduced for 1971. The fifth-generation LeSabre was introduced for the 1977 model year and was offered in sedan, coupe and station wagon body styles. By 1986, the sixth-generation model was sold only as a sedan or coupe.
When the seventh generation was introduced for 1992, the LeSabre was only offered as a sedan. Sharing many components with models like the Oldsmobile 88 and Pontiac Bonneville, this generation features front-wheel drive, a four-speed automatic transmission and a 3.8-liter V6 engine.
The Buick LeSabre was last redesigned for the 2000 model year and was built on the same platform as the Buick Riviera, Oldsmobile Aurora and Pontiac Bonneville.
Sold solely as a four-door sedan, the LeSabre offers seating for six and 18 cubic feet of trunk space. The base LeSabre Custom came with standard features that include cruise control and keyless entry, as well as power windows and locks. The higher Limited trim adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control and a power-adjustable driver’s seat to the list of standard equipment. Heated front seats, leather upholstery and a CD player were available as standalone options when the LeSabre was new.
Only one engine was offered with the 2000-2005 LeSabre: a 3.8-liter V6 that produces 205 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. The 2000 Buick LeSabre gets an EPA-estimated 17/27 mpg city/highway. 2002 and newer models get slightly better estimates at 18/27 mpg.
The LeSabre was last crash tested for the 2005 model year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the LeSabre four out of five stars for its performance in front driver and side impact crash tests. The LeSabre received five out of five stars for its performance in rollover and front passenger crash tests. Bear in mind that NHTSA crash tests became more stringent after the LeSabre went out of production, starting in the 2011 model year.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the LeSabre the highest rating of Good for its performance in moderate overlap front crash tests. However, the LeSabre received the lowest Poor rating in testing for the head restraints and seats.
