2018 to Present: Audi S5
The S5 exists to provide an alternative for those who covet the Audi A5 but want handling that’s geared toward enthusiast tastes. The S5 is currently in its second generation, which was launched with the 2018 model year. Relative to its predecessor, the current S5 raises the bar, offering improved performance and a broader array of feature content.
The Audi S5 is a midsize luxury car that seats four passengers, and it’s sold as a coupe, hatchback (Sportback) and convertible (Cabriolet). The current model is notable for its sharply creased hood, broad single-frame grille and muscular haunches. Standard LED headlights brighten the path ahead, and a rear view reveals LED taillights.
A turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 lives under the hood, and it generates 354 horsepower. As you’d expect, the V6 hustles the S5 along with satisfying quickness, and driving dynamics are pleasant and smooth. Gears are shifted by an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all models are equipped with all-wheel drive.
The S5’s cabin looks modern and sophisticated, with impressive materials quality and eye-pleasing design. Coupe and convertible models offer a competitive amount of trunk space for the class, while the S5 Sportback’s design yields impressive room for cargo with the rear seat folded.
This handsome German luxury car is available with a solid lineup of features. All models come with LED daytime running lights, Bluetooth phone and music streaming, a 7-inch display screen, three-zone automatic climate control, a manually adjustable tilt-and-telescoping steering column, leather upholstery, heated front seats , blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert and collision mitigation with automatic braking. Coupes are equipped with a panoramic sunroof.
Available features include larger wheels, navigation, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition technology, lane departure warning and a premium sound system.
The Audi S5’s rivals include the BMW 4 Series coupe, Gran Coupe and convertible. There’s also the Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe and convertible to consider. All these picks are excellent choices, but the S5 offers a singular take on value and refinement.
Earlier Audi S5 Models
The first generation of the Audi S5 was launched in 2008, and initially, only a coupe body style was offered. This S5 came with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, and it was powered by a 354-horsepower V8 engine. Standard features include bi-xenon headlights, tri-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming mirrors and leather upholstery. The list of available features includes a navigation system.
In 2009, the S5 added an auxiliary audio jack as standard equipment. Driver-assistive technology such as blind spot warning and adaptive cruise control became available.
For model year 2010, the S5 added a convertible body style to the mix. The S5 convertible was powered by a supercharged V6 offering 333 horsepower. In 2011, the top S5 trim added rear parking sensors and a rearview camera as standard equipment.
In 2013, S5 coupes ditched the V8 and replaced it with the V6 that powered the S5 convertible. Both body styles received minor interior and exterior enhancements. For 2014, keyless ignition and entry became standard on all models, and a drive-mode system was also added as standard equipment.
A Bang & Olufsen stereo joined the S5’s list of standard features for 2016, and no further changes were made until the model’s 2018 redesign.
