The 2020 Mini Cooper is a subcompact hatchback that comes in 2 Door, 4 Door, and Convertible models, seating up to five people. It’s for drivers who want a premium small car that’s quick and nimble, with styling and character that set it apart from the crowd.
What Makes It Unique?
The Mini Cooper’s iconic exterior styling borrows cues from the original Minis of the 1960s, with LED taillights featuring the Union Jack. Its interior design is equally distinctive, with aircraft-inspired toggle switches at the bottom of the dashboard’s center stack. It offers three degrees of performance, all featuring the brand’s signature “go-kart handling.” A full-electric SE is new for 2020; we treat it as a separate model.
Mini Cooper vs. Other Minis
The Mini Cooper is the brand’s entry-level model. It shares showroom space with the slightly larger four-door Clubman and the Countryman crossover SUV.
Mini Cooper vs. Competition
While the Mini Cooper is a rather singular ride, cross-shopping is still possible:
Honda Fit: It’s not as sporty as the Mini Cooper, but it performs well and has a comparatively roomy interior.
Kia Soul: Likewise expressively designed, it’s roomy, well-finished, and has a quick available turbo-4 engine for added speed.
BMW X1: Costlier than the Mini, but more spacious and every bit as sporty.
Mini Cooper Clubman: A slightly longer four-door alternative to the Cooper with added backseat room and a split horizontal-opening hatch.
Is the 2020 Model Year Right for You?
Changes for 2020
The Mini Cooper 2 Door, 4 Door, and Convertible carry over largely unchanged.
2020 Mini Coopers vs. Older Coopers
BMW brought back the iconic Mini Cooper for the 2002 model year. Now in its third modern generation, it was last redesigned for 2014, and the top John Cooper Works model returned for 2016. It has otherwise continued with only minor updates. You could save money by choosing a used Mini Cooper.
The JCW is the quickest and best-handling version, but it’s expensive and only available in 2 Door and Convertible form. The Oxford Edition is offered in 2 Door and 4 Door versions with additional features.
2020 Mini Cooper Performance
The Mini Cooper has three engine options:
134-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine with a 7-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive
189-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with a 7-speed automatic and front-wheel drive
228-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic and front-wheel drive
Compared with the class? The base engine is on the low end in the subcompact car segment, but the turbo-4s are as good as any competitors’.
1.5-liter: 31 EPA-estimated combined mpg*
2.0-liter: 30 mpg
2.0-liter (Convertible and JCW): 29 mpg
2.0-liter (JCW Convertible): 28 mpg
*The EPA uses a mixture of highway and city driving for its combined estimate.
Compared with the class? It’s about mid-pack among subcompact cars in spite of its peppier engines.
Convertible: 5.7/7.6 cubic feet (behind rear seat, with seatbacks folded)
Compared with the class: Most cars in this class have more cargo space.
Compared with the class? Front seat room is generous enough, but while two adults can squeeze into the backseat of a 4 Door if necessary, it’s too tight a fit in 2 Door and Convertible models.
2020 Mini Cooper Warranty
4 years / 50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper and powertrain. Covers many parts and systems but doesn’t include consumables such as brakes, tires, wiper blades, shocks, or struts. Includes major engine and transmission components.
3 years / 36,000 miles free scheduled maintenance
Warranty and free maintenance are measured from the date the first owner purchases the car.
Compared with the class? Mini’s bumper-to-bumper coverage is above-average and the free maintenance component is generous, but unlike many brands it doesn’t have longer coverage for major components like the engine and transmission.
