The 2020 Honda HR-V is a subcompact crossover SUV that seats five people. It’s meant for drivers who want the added practicality and passenger room a small SUV affords, plus the foul-weather security of available all-wheel drive.
What Makes It Unique?
The Honda HR-V is spacious inside for such a small footprint, especially in terms of cargo-carrying abilities Honda describes as class-leading. It comes with a second row “magic seat” whose seats can fold flat or be folded and tumbled forward to accommodate taller objects.
Honda HR-V vs. Other Hondas
The HR-V is Honda’s smallest and least-expensive SUV. It shares showroom space with the automaker’s other SUVs: the compact CR-V, two-row midsize Passport, and three-row Pilot.
HR-V vs. Competition
The subcompact segment is still relatively new, yet if already features a fleet of competent competitors:
Toyota C-HR: Dynamically styled but slow, it’s one of the few small SUVs not to offer all-wheel drive.
Buick Encore: A near-luxury entry that’s nicely finished inside and delivers a smooth and quiet ride.
Mazda CX-3: A truly fun to-drive subcompact SUV, but it lacks backseat room and cargo space.
Kia Soul: Boasts quirky styling and a spacious interior, with a peppy turbo-4 engine available but no all-wheel drive.
Is the 2020 Model Year Right for You?
What’s New for 2020
The 2020 HR-V carries over unchanged for 2020.
2020 Honda HR-Vs vs. Older HR-Vs
The HR-V debuted for the 2016 model year. It got freshened styling and two new trim levels for the 2019 model year, along with other updates that included dropping the previously standard 6-speed manual transmission. You can save money buying a used Honda HR-V, as the essentials have been maintained over the years.
Unlike most brands, Honda does not offer standalone options; the only way to get additional features is to move up to a costlier trim level. That said, we’d recommend the EX, which comes with the Honda Sensing suite of driver-assist safety systems, a moonroof, proximity key with push-button start, heated front seats, and automatic climate control.
The Sport isn’t any sportier than the rest of the line, but it does get blackout trim, sport pedals, and 18-inch wheels. The costly Touring trim comes with all-wheel drive standard, and it’s the only way to get a navigation system, power driver’s seat, and garage-door opener.
2020 Honda HR-V Performance
The Honda HR-V has one available engine:
141-horsepower 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine with a continuously variable automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive
Compared with the class? It’s about average among subcompact SUVs in terms of power. The class standout is the Kia Soul GT-Line Turbo trim, which has a 201-horsepower turbo-4 under its hood.
FWD: 30 EPA-estimated combined mpg*
AWD: 28-29 mpg
*The EPA uses a mixture of highway and city driving for its combined estimate.
Compared with the class? It’s a bit above-average for the class, but still falls short of the Nissan Kicks’ 33 mpg combined.
