The 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a full-size van. A long list of configurations lets shoppers choose from two wheelbases, two roof heights, three body lengths. Seating is available for up to 15 people. Cargo, passenger and cutaway body styles are available as well, as are models with five gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR). That’s reflected in the Sprinter’s further 1500, 2500, 3500, 3500XD and 4500 designations, which stand in as trim levels.
A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard with a nine-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Powertrain options include a turbo diesel V6, a seven-speed automatic and four-wheel drive.
The Sprinter is all-new for 2019 and competes against rivals like the Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster.
Designers were inspired by the brand’s passenger-car lineup when creating the Sprinter’s expressive front end. There’s even a car-like lower-intake opening beneath the relatively compact grille. Naturally, the Mercedes star is front and center. As a sporty touch, the lower body-side moldings seem to flow out of the front bumper like racing stripes.
Standard features include automatic headlights, power-adjustable mirrors, a sliding passenger-side door, swing-out rear cargo doors and 16-inch steel wheels. Sprinter options include LED headlights, foglights, heated power-folding power-adjustable mirrors, bumper steps, a driver-side sliding door, power sliding side doors, a rear tow hook, dual rear wheels and 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
The Sprinter’s low-profile dashboard is dominated by a large contrast-color panel for infotainment display and climate vents. In models with the largest screens, the setup looks like an oversized audio head unit of the old-school variety, with the climate vents as the knobs. The result is a modern appearance that’s complemented by a wide variety of storage solutions.
In the cargo van, two bucket seats are standard. The Sprinter crew van adds a second row with seating for three people. Two layouts are available for the passenger van: four rows that can handle 12 people and a five-row configuration for 15 total passengers. The maximum storage capacity is in the Sprinter 3500 cargo van when specified with the highest roof, longest wheelbase and longest body. This combination yields 512 cubic feet of cargo room behind the front seats.
The Sprinter is equipped with standard features including fabric upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, air conditioning, power door locks and a tilt-adjustable steering wheel. Also available are heated front seats, automatic climate control, cruise control and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel. For the cargo van, a metal load-compartment floor is standard. Plastic or wood floors are optional.
The standard powertrain for the Sprinter is anchored by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. That unit makes 188 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It’s matched with a nine-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. A turbodiesel 3.0-liter V6 with 188 horsepower, 325 pound-feet of torque and a seven-speed automatic is an engine option. The diesel engine can be paired with four-wheel drive.
The diesel-powered Sprinter can tow up to 7,500 pounds when properly equipped. The top payload ratings are with the cutaway and chassis cab. These body styles have a full cab up front and a bare frame in the back. That allows you to add a body that’s custom-tailored for your needs. The Sprinter 4500 version has a payload of 7,430 pounds.
Note that the EPA does not publish fuel economy ratings for the Sprinter and similar heavy-duty vans.
The Sprinter has a standard audio system that bundles a 3-inch display, Bluetooth, a USB port, an AM/FM radio and five speakers. Mercedes’ advanced MBUX infotainment system is an option with either a 10.25- or 7-inch touchscreen plus mobile Wi-Fi, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, an enhanced voice-recognition control system, wireless charging, a navigation system, multiple USB ports and a 13-speaker audio system.
Crosswind assistance, lane-keeping assist and a rearview camera are standard. The Sprinter’s optional safety technology includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, automatic forward emergency braking, automatic reverse emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, a driver attention monitor, forward collision warning, lane departure alert, lane-keeping assistance, rear cross-traffic alert, a 360-degree camera system, a 360-degree parking sensor array and traffic sign recognition.
