If you prefer cars over trucks, SUVs and other vehicles, there are many reasons to consider the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu. The first is its striking exterior design that carries over into a relatively roomy interior. You can equip that cabin with some of Chevy’s top features. There’s even a high-efficiency powertrain available if you put a priority on fuel economy.
The Malibu midsize sedan seats five people. It’s offered in L, LS, RS, LT, Hybrid and Premier trim levels. The standard powertrain for the Malibu comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CVT is new this year. Along with the hybrid setup, options include a more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine matched with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
Chevy restyles the Malibu for 2019 with new grille and taillamp designs. Standard features include Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and a rearview camera. Heated outboard rear seats are another notable new option.
The Malibu competes against mainstream midsize sedans like the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Camry.
Chevy flips the usual script for the Malibu’s front end. That means it has a low-profile upper grille and a much larger opening underneath. The result is modern, distinctive and a perfect complement to the Malibu’s multifaceted body. A long tapering roofline and integrated exhaust outlets bring the look to a clean finish at the rear.
Automatic halogen headlights are standard with daytime running lights, power-adjustable mirrors, a capless fuel filler and 16-inch steel wheels with painted covers. The Malibu RS gets a sporty update with standard features such as black “Bowtie” badges, a blacked-out grille, black chrome 18-inch wheels, a rear spoiler and dual exhaust outlets with polished tips. Options for the Malibu include LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, heated mirrors, a power sunroof and 16- through 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
The Malibu welcomes you to the cabin with prominent wing-shaped dashboard trim. The trim holds everything together by underlining the center stack and topping the outboard climate vents. Soft flowing shapes add expressive touches to the Malibu’s sculpted door panels. In the back, 60/40-split folding seats are standard.
The gas-only trims have a trunk capacity of 15.7 cubic feet, while the Malibu Hybrid provides 11.6 cubic feet of trunk space.
Standard features include cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, manual air conditioning, power accessories, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column and a multifunction steering wheel. Chevy further provides optional leather upholstery, climate-controlled front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a six-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, heated outboard rear seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel.
A turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine is standard for the Malibu. That unit produces 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, which is managed by a standard CVT. Front-wheel drive is also standard. The Malibu Premier has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a nine-speed automatic as standard equipment. The Premier’s turbo engine produces 250 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque.
In the Malibu Hybrid, a CVT and a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine are standard. The hybrid’s engine works with a 1.5-kWh battery and two electric motors to deliver 182 horsepower. Additional hybrid highlights include EPA ratings of 49/43 mpg city/highway.
The Malibu is rated at 29/36 mpg city/highway with its standard powertrain.
The standard infotainment system for the Malibu bundles an eight-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, a USB port and a six-speaker audio system. Options include a connected navigation system, a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless charging, satellite radio and a nine-speaker Bose sound system.
A rearview camera and rear-seat reminder system are standard for driver assistance. Chevrolet supplies optional technologies such as adaptive cruise control, automatic forward braking, front pedestrian braking, automatic high beams, automatic parking assistance, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane departure warning, pedestrian detection, rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors.
