The 2017 Subaru Legacy is one of the most affordable midsize sedans on the market, and all models come standard with all-wheel drive. That fact gives this sedan an important handling and safety edge if you frequently travel in wet or snowy weather.

Five trim levels are available with the 2017 Legacy: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited and 3.6R Limited. Both four- and six-cylinder engines are offered. All models are governed by a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

New for 2017 is the 2.5i Sport trim, which includes standard fog lights, 18-inch sport wheels, and a two-tone interior. An alloy wheel package is now available on the base model for this first time. On the safety front, Limited models equipped with the available EyeSight Driver Assist Technology package now include reverse automatic braking and high-beam assist.

The Subaru Legacy’s sheet metal offers a fair amount of flair, with clean lines and sculpted surfaces.

The Legacy’s front fascia is marked by a trapezoidal upper grille and a pronounced lower grille. Wraparound headlamps and signature lighting illuminate the path ahead. A profile view presents a slightly rising beltline and elegant character lines, while wraparound taillights brighten the rear fascia. The 2017 Legacy travels on standard 17-inch wheels, and 18-inch alloys are available.

The list of available exterior features includes a power sunroof and side mirrors with integrated turn signals. Legacy 2.5i Sport models like our test vehicle come with exterior upgrades that enhance their attractiveness. These include a body-colored rocker spoiler with chrome accents, fog-light covers, silver-finish side mirrors and a sport-type front grille.

The Legacy’s cabin feels airy and spacious, and this Subaru is one of the roomier choices in its class. Comfortable accommodations are provided for all five passengers. All models come with a 60/40-split folding bench seat. Cloth seats are standard, and leather upholstery is available.

The Legacy’s trunk provides 15 cubic feet of cargo capacity. This slightly trails the capacity provided by rivals like the 2017 Toyota Camry (15.4 cubic feet) and Ford Fusion (16 cubic feet).

Our test 2.5i Sport model featured an attractive two-tone interior. The seats and door inlays reflect that look with blue double stitching adding further contrast. All models feature a clean dashboard layout, including an instrument panel with dual readouts.

The center stack is ordered from top to bottom with a color display followed by the audio system and a covered storage compartment. All four doors include beverage holders and storage pockets.

All models are equipped with a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, steering wheel-mounted controls, air conditioning, cruise control and full power accessories. The list of interior upgrades includes heated front and rear seats, as well as a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a four-way power-adjustable passenger seat.

Two engine choices are available with the 2017 Legacy, and both are paired with a CVT. Most models are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. This model gets an EPA-estimated 25/34 mpg city/highway.

The Legacy 3.6R Limited comes with a 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine making 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. This model earns an EPA-estimated 20/28 mpg city/highway.

Our test model was powered by the smaller engine. This engine supplies average off-the-mark acceleration. Stomp the gas pedal and the sedan roars forward with the transmission seemingly stretching to accommodate the higher rpm. Passing power is sufficient, and handling is light to the touch.

Where this model shines best is on wet or twisty roads, as the all-wheel-drive system sends torque to the wheels that need it most. Consider this an edge in a segment in which most competitors fail to offer this option.

All Legacy models come with a four-speaker stereo, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, an in-dash CD player, HD radio, a USB port and an auxiliary input jack. Subaru’s Starlink infotainment system and a 6.2-inch touch screen are standard.

Available upgrades add satellite radio and a larger 7-inch touch screen. Top-trim models are equipped with a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and a navigation system is available.

Neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto is currently available with the Legacy. You’ll find this smartphone mirroring technology in competitors such as the 2017 Honda Accord, Ford Fusion and Volkswagen Passat.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given the Subaru Legacy with its Top Safety Pick+ award for 2017. The Legacy earned a top Superior rating for its available crash avoidance and mitigation technology, and certain trims earned a top score of Good for their headlight illumination. Similarly, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has awarded with 2017 Legacy with a perfect five-star overall score.

Subaru is known for making safety a top priority with its vehicles. Every model comes with a rearview camera, and standard all-wheel drive gives these vehicles an important handling edge, but it doesn’t stop there.

The EyeSight Driver Assist Technology package is available on all trims except the base model, and it includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and forward collision warning with automatic braking. Reverse automatic braking, automatic high-beam assist and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert are also offered.

Legacy Premium and Limited trims come with Starlink Connected Services. This feature provides automatic collision notification and emergency assistance. Safety Plus and Security Plus upgrades are available, and these throw in features such as stolen vehicle recovery and remote vehicle access.

Paying extra for all-wheel drive typically results in a price premium. That feature is a rarity in the midsize-sedan segment, and the short list of picks offering it include the Ford Fusion.

The 2017 Legacy starts at a competitive $21,995 plus $820 for destination. The 2.5i Premium is priced from $23,995, and this trim introduces the available EyeSight Driver Assist Technology package. The 2.5i Sport model retails for $25,995. The two other trims are the 2.5i Limited ($28,840) and the 3.6R Limited ($31,640).

We’re fans of the 2.5i Sport model, and its 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, sport grille, two-tone interior and power moonroof are welcome additions. We recommend opting for the EyeSight package ($2,095), which brings in a navigation system and a bevy of active safety features. Doing so brings the final cost of your Legacy 2.5i Sport to $28,910, and this is a reasonable price for a midsize sedan offering this level of feature content.

Shoppers interested in a family sedan should check out the Subaru Legacy. This vehicle is brimming with attributes that most buyers seek out when evaluating family transportation. The Legacy impresses with strong safety features, secure handling and outstanding value.
