The Nissan Rogue was a bit late to the compact-SUV party, but it has made up for lost time and is now one of the best-selling models in its segment. The Rogue is stylish, roomy and versatile, and its affordable pricing is gentle on your pocketbook. All-wheel drive is available.

The 2017 Rogue is a compact SUV that seats five, or seven when equipped with an available third-row seat. A four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) are standard, and paired with standard front-wheel drive or an optional all-wheel-drive system. Three trim levels are available: S, SV and SL.

For 2017, Nissan has added a Rogue Hybrid model that comes in SV and SL trims. The hybrid arrives as the gas-only model receives sheet metal changes and enhanced feature content. The Rogue is upgraded with a new grille, LED daytime running lights and tail lamps and a new rear bumper. The lineup of available features now includes amenities such as a heated steering wheel, a hands-free liftgate and adaptive cruise control.

Compact SUVs have gotten larger in recent years, and the Nissan Rogue’s robust sizing is proof of this trend. This model is marked by a distinct V-Motion grille that’s surrounded by headlamp assemblies with wing-like LED daytime running lights. Standard halogen headlamps light the path ahead.

The Rogue features a long hood, a steeply raked windshield, a flowing roof and a high beltline. The roofline flows into the liftgate, with a standard spoiler topping off the view from the rear. Distinct character lines and body sculpting give the Rogue a sporty look, and base models come with 17-inch wheels.

A number of exterior upgrades are available, and the list includes heated side mirrors with integrated turn-signal indicators, rear privacy glass, roof rails and a motion-activated liftgate.

Among compact SUVs, the Rogue has a unique trick up its sleeve: it’s one of the few models in the segment that can be configured with a third row, boosting seating capacity to seven (the Rogue Hybrid accommodates five). This crossover offers excellent interior room with ample space for adults in the first two rows. Driver-seat comfort is on par with that of segment leaders like the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V.

Cloth seats are standard, and all models come with air conditioning, as well as power windows and door locks. A standard tilt-and-telescoping steering column helps you achieve an ideal position behind the wheel. The list of available upgrades includes leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.

With the gas-only Rogue, cargo capacity behind the second row stands at 32 cubic feet, and with the second row folded, this figure grows to 70 cubic feet. With the optional third row in place, cargo capacity is slashed to 9.4 cubic feet.

The Rogue Hybrid provides 27.3 cubic feet of capacity behind the second row, and this figure swells to 61.4 cubic feet with the second row folded.

All gas-only 2017 Rogues are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with170 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. This model is rated at 26/33 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive and 25/32 mpg city/highway with all-wheel drive.

The 2017 Rogue offers a spirited ride, quickly gaining speed under hard acceleration. The CVT doesn’t always have the most natural feel, but it gets the job done. A Sport mode provides simulated shift points for customers who prefer more engaged driving.

The all-new Rogue Hybrid features an electric motor and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The engine produces 141 horsepower and 144 pound-feet of torque on its own, and both power sources work together to deliver a combined 176 horsepower.

The Rogue Hybrid behaves much in the same way as the gasoline model, with some differences. Like other hybrids, the SUV moves quietly until firmer acceleration is required, and that’s when the engine kicks in. While the gas-only Rogue offers firm braking, the hybrid’s squishy brake pedal is a little less confidence inspiring. Your reward for driving the Rogue Hybrid is fuel economy of up to 33/35 mpg.

Standard technology features in the 2017 Rogue include a four-speaker audio system with a CD player and a 5-inch color display. All models come with satellite radio, an auxiliary port, a USB jack and Bluetooth wireless technology. Hands-free text messaging and a rearview camera are standard.

The list of optional technology features includes a 7-inch display, a nine-speaker Bose premium sound system and navigation. Nissan’s navigation system has a small learning curve and supplies accurate turn-by-turn directions.

The Rogue is available with driver-assistance features such as blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist and rear cross-traffic alert. Forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection is also offered.

In crashworthiness testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2017 Rogue earned top scores of Good in all crashworthiness categories. The Rogue also earned a Superior rating for front crash prevention and an Acceptable rating in headlight tests, which helped it achieve an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award.

In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Rogue received an overall score of four out of five stars.

The 2017 Nissan Rogue starts at $23,820 plus $940 for destination. All-wheel drive bumps up the price by $1,350. The Rogue SV begins at $25,240, while the top-of-the-line SL retails from $29,960. An all-wheel drive Rogue SL with the $2,020 SL Premium package (power sunroof, forward emergency braking and LED headlights) and $770 SL Platinum package (lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, adaptive cruise control) will run you about $33,690.

Choose a Rogue Hybrid and you’ll find prices of $26,240 for the SV Hybrid and $31,160 for the SL Hybrid, excluding destination.

Aggressive pricing helps make the Rogue one of the best-selling compact SUVs. The Rogue Hybrid is priced below the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, with the Toyota logging a base price of $29,030.

With the Rogue, Nissan has devised a winning formula. Powertrain and trim simplicity means that buyers can easily make a decision based on their equipment needs.

Adding a hybrid to the mix is intriguing, especially given the low price difference relative to the gas-only model. The Rogue Hybrid also emits fewer emissions, which is a desirable feature for environmentally minded consumers.

Beyond the base model, either the SV or SL should satisfy most buyers, with the latter offering driver-assistance technologies. Choosing all-wheel drive is nearly mandatory in snow country, but this feature can prove beneficial when traversing slick roads everywhere.
