The 2017 Jaguar XE is an all-new compact sedan featuring an elegant design, sharp performance and a generous array of technology features. It’s also Jaguar’s first small sedan in several years.

The Jaguar XE seats five and comes with standard rear-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. Its powertrain lineup is comprised of a pair of forced-induction gasoline engines and one turbodiesel engine.

The all-new XE employs a lightweight aluminum architecture to save weight, and its near 50-50 front-to-rear weight distribution results in exceptional driving dynamics. Four trim levels are offered: base, Premium, Prestige and R-Sport.

The 2017 XE successfully advances the Jaguar brand’s current styling convention on its small frame. This sedan offers a muscular stance with flowing lines underscoring its cab-forward layout.

The front fascia features distinctive housings for the headlamps and fog lights. From the rear, a trunk lip spoiler, sporty wraparound combination lamps and an available dual chrome-tip exhaust amplify this sedan’s performance expression.

Embossed chrome side vents and a rising beltline mark the XE’s silhouette. All models are equipped with alloy wheels set within all-season or performance tires, depending on the trim.

Standard features include heated sideview mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers and approach illumination. Options include auto-dimming and power-folding side mirrors, as well as LED daytime running lights. Base models come with 17-inch wheels, and 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels are available.

Slip behind the wheel of the 2017 XE and you’ll find yourself perched low in body-hugging seats. Simulated leather seats are standard, and Taurus leather trim is found in the Prestige and R-Sport models.

The base model features a fixed rear bench seat, while a 40/20/40 split-folding bench seat is standard elsewhere. Rear seat room is adequate for three and ideal for two.

All models come with dual-zone automatic climate control, an electric tilt-and-slide moonroof and power front seats. The XE Prestige brings in a heated steering wheel, front-seat power lumbar support, interior mood lighting, heated front seats and a power-adjustable steering column.

Press the start button and the XE’s rotary gear selector rises into place. The selector is located just ahead of the JaguarDrive Control panel offering Normal, Eco, Dynamic and Rain/Ice/Snow modes. Overall the cockpit layout is clean, elegant and easy to decipher.

The 2017 XE offers 15.9 cubic feet of trunk space, which easily bests the Acura TLX’s 13.2 cubic feet. With the available split-folding rear seat partially lowered, large items such as skis can be transported.

Jaguar offers three engine choices with the 2017 XE. Each engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 240 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque is standard and is available on rear-wheel drive models only. Available across the product line is a turbodiesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 180 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque. A supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine is also available, producing 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque.

The base XE gets an EPA-estimated 21/30 mpg city/highway, while models with the turbodiesel engine return up to 32/42 mpg city/highway.

Our all-wheel drive test vehicle came with the supercharged V6 engine. Full power kicks in at low rpm and moves this sedan from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds. Consider this your engine of choice when battling the BMW 340i, Cadillac ATS and other compact luxury sedans.

Without a doubt, the Jaguar XE is fun to drive. The configurable dynamics setup is ported from the F-Type sports car. Engine, steering, gearshift and suspension characteristics may be personalized to suit your driving ambitions.

Steering is excellent as the front double wishbone design is also based on the F-Type. This gives the driver the connection he seeks, and it’s not unlike what you would experience in the Mercedes-Benz C300. The rear suspension is tuned to allow for sharp responses and precise handling, important hallmarks of any luxury sports sedan. Despite its performance characteristics, the Jaguar XE offers a comfortable ride.

The XE’s technological nerve center is known as InControl Touch. It features an 8-inch touch screen, with intuitive touch and swipe controls managing a number of features, including audio, climate and available navigation with Wi-Fi at the Prestige trim level.

The system may also be controlled by voice commands, and smartphone-related apps are included with the XE Prestige. The system is user-friendly and should be familiar to tech-savvy drivers. It comes standard across the model line. A six-speaker audio system is also standard.

All models feature Bluetooth connectivity, HD radio and a USB port. The XE Premium brings in an 11-speaker Meridian audio system, and a 17-speaker Meridian surround sound system is also available.

A standalone option is head-up display. It projects such key information as your current speed, adaptive cruise control speed, traffic sign recognition and turn-by-turn guidance.

The 2017 XE’s standard safety features include a suite of air bags and InControl Protect, which provides roadside assistance and notifies first responders in emergencies. A rearview camera is added at the Premium trim level.

Available driver-assistance features include blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking assist. Forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking, as well as lane keeping assist and a driver drowsiness monitor are standard on the R-Sport.

With a base price of $34,900, the 2017 XE provides an affordable gateway to the Jaguar brand. Premium models start at $37,500, Prestige models start a $41,400, and the R-Sport trim starts at $46,500.

Our test XE Prestige with the V6 engine and all-wheel drive came fully equipped. Key upgrades included Vision ($2,400), Comfort & Convenience ($2,100) and Technology ($2,700) packages. The head-up display is a $990 standalone option. The XE R-Sport is the only trim offering the full range of driver-assistance features.

As with competing models, the Jaguar XE’s low starting price is negated by tantalizing equipment upgrades that can push your final price above $50,000. The driving dynamics of the rear-wheel drive model are excellent, so all-wheel drive isn’t necessary unless you regularly face rough weather. If you choose the V6-equipped XE Premium with rear-wheel drive and opt for navigation ($500), your final suggested price will come in at $43,195, including a $995 destination fee.

With the XE and F-Pace now available in the Jaguar lineup, luxury shoppers should seriously consider this premium brand. While Jaguar doesn’t offer as many models as Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz, there isn’t a weak spot among the five vehicles that are currently available.

Jaguar has come a long way over the past several years, offering strong improvements in technology, functionality and dependability. Good-looking and universally competent, the 2017 Jaguar XE is proof of how much the brand has progressed.
